  • Secret of Mana and Mario RPG impressions on VC

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

Well, the graphics and music are still fine looking for both titles. Though a warning, on a widescreen display (or it might be the 44 inch width) Mario RPG has graphical issues.

Secret of Mana is very girlfriend friendly with multiplayer. Mario RPG is not (but entertaining enough that watching the game is still fun) - the controls are not as intuitive, and non-gamers will have trouble navigating the pseudo-3D world and hitting the button at the correct time (in different places) for critical hits during attacks; on the otherhand, regular gamers will find this game easy and fun.

The dialogue for both games is fairly light-hearted and entertaining.

The added feature of save state in the VC makes these games MUCH better for an older crowd who might not have 40 minutes to play between two save points (remember when we were kids and we had virtually unlimited time?).

Over-all, both games are fun, and a good reminder of times when RPGs/adventures were still tons of fun. Warning though, Secret of Mana has a lot of huge annoyances on single player, it is awesome with 3 player though. The biggest annoyance is hits that don't register, or register way too late.

Both of these games are a surprising amount of fun 13-15 years later; given the recommended play styles I stated above. These aren't complex titles Final Fantasy 12 or Knights of the Old Republic, but you might have a lot more fun with them over a decade after the last time you played them (I am making an assumption here).

I recommend getting both to anyone here except Sine, Kali, and Tessian.

One annoyance I'll add about Secret of Mana is that when you're wwalking around, rather than having your character relatively central on the screen, he/she is close to the edge. I have been hit quite a few times because I didn't have enough time to react.
