  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

So I beat this game last night (I know, 4 years too late, but hey, I got around to it). What an excellent sequel to Superstar Saga, one of my fav RPGs in the last decade. They do such an excellent job melding platforming/action with RPG, particularly in the battles. The storyline is cute, funny, fits very well within the Mario universe (you are saving the Princess after all), and is just a pretty solid game period. The two I've played so far lasted around the 20 hour mark (give or take a couple of hours) which to me is a great length for an RPG. If you're looking for a light, SNES-style RPG with neat game mechanics that you can pick up and play in 20 minute chunks (which makes them perfect handheld RPGs), these games are awesome.

Just to reiterate, the rest of this discussion involves a lot about the ending sequence of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (the first DS one). If you haven't beaten it, I strongly suggest you don't read on

So, about the ending. I was shocked at how crazy intense the ending is. You get this little warning just before you go into the battle to save Peach. They tell you about how they can take you back in time so you can stock up and stuff. I had like 30 trampolines, 30 cannonballs, 30 Mix Flowers, 30 red shells, etc. Considering how the rest of the game went, I figured no problem. Man, was I wrong. The princess and her sister are fucking powerful with regenerating bullshit. Considering you have to take off 300 damage before you can even hurt them and then that regenerates after a bout 3 turns and they each have about 5000 hitpoints (I'm guessing), it's WAAAY more intense than any other battle you played throughout the game. Couple that with the fact that you have to take out both the feet to get to the crown and then the crown to get to the body on the second princess and they each regenerate after 3 rounds or so and have over 300 hitpoints each, it's a crazy, intense final battle sequence. Took me over 2 hours to do it considering that many of the bros items you have don't work on them at all or are poor.

Not complaining here just marveling at how much more intense that was than the rest of the game. Personally, I liked the challenge, the rest of the game was rather easy. But wow, it was shocking.
