Is no one here other than Eric playing this? Eric, not sure why but your trophies don't appear for me so I'll make this a spoiler-free post to ensure you don't get tempted

My cuz and I beat this one last night. I actually just beat God of War 1 in the PS3 collection last week (I was playing it after my FF13 sessions after frustration got the better of me) and I'm quite impressed on how great of a sequel it is. At the end of the day, it does absolutely nothing different (hell, it only introduces new bosses and mini-bosses; if I'm not mistaken, there's just the one new enemy in one small area of the game) and has all of the pluses and minuses of the series core gameplay in tact. It's not going to convert anyone who doesn't like the series into a fan but if you really enjoyed the first two games, you should absolutely adore this one (I haven't beaten #2 but I assume it's about the same as #1).

Two things it does extremely well are storyline/narrative and graphics. These are a huge part of the series (it is really a style over substance series) and they're done extraordinarily well in this game. In the 11 hours it took us to beat this game, there was a solid 3-4 hours minimum of pure narrative through cut-scenes and some in-game dialogue. The storyline was great with solid voice acting (hell, Rip Torn is in it :-) and great ties to Greek mythology. With FF13 and now God of War 3, we finally have games challenging MGS4's supremacy as best-looking game of this generation (not quite better since both rely on very distant or static backgrounds and the character models aren't quite as detailed or fluid but very damned close). GoW3 is absolutely gorgeous to look at and the FMV backgrounds along with the multi-layered foreground deliver an amazing sense of scale that makes you yearn for Shadow of the Colossus 2. You get this right from the opening 20 minute sequence to the game where you feel like you're a tiny player in this enormous, epic battle. It's incredible how well they pulled of the sense of scale throughout the game, in particular one area later on. It's certainly an experience.

And as any good sequel should, it also eliminates some of the annoyances/shortcomings of its predecessors, such as the excessive silly puzzles (from the first ,at least), a lot of backtracking, and the elimination of the silly beam walking. But at the same time, it's still a very basic brawler with a still-annoying camera (that they use quite extensively to "hide" stuff) that hasn't really advanced much at all gameplay-wise. But with this series, we know that going in so we're expecting it. We're not playing it for depth of gameplay but more for the flash and storyline and this game has it in spades.

I'd highly recommend this for fans of the series but if you don't like the prequels, this one will certainly not change your mind.

Aaaaah I was wondering why he sounded so familiar!

I'm still making my way through it and it's great so far. God of War 2 was one of the best games of the last gen, def in my top three.

I'm waiting for my friend to finish it and platinum it so I can borrow. I'm really looking forward to it.

It took my cuz and until about 5 hours in and multiple conversations with the character to figure out who he was. Then it was Dodgeball quotes for a few minutes :-)

I'm debating whether or not to go through the challenges (I did a few of them already) but they're kinda annoying and honestly, the gameplay isn't the strength of the game. I'll probably just trade it in later today or tomorrow (if you trade it in by Tuesday night, you get $60 for it at EB with a purchase receipt). These games don't exactly have enormous replay value but I will probably wanna go through them again for fun in a couple years or so. So I'll probably play GoW2 off the collection with my cuz starting this week, I'll let ya know what I think of it.
