Movember

I think this is a great campaign, it caught on where I live last year. It's a fundraiser for male-specific diseases, especially prostate cancer. It began in Australia years ago and has become fairly popular elsewhere over the past couple of years. It has raised over 175 million dollars in total, and it will be great to see it raise millions more.

Essentially, it is about growing a moustache and acting as a walking/talking billboard for charity - a mo, if you will. The rules are simple (copied from wikipedia):

1. On Shadowe'en (October 31st), the complete moustache region, including the entire upper lip and the handlebar zones, must be completely shaved.

2. For the entire duration of Movember (Movember 1st - 30th inclusive), no hair shall be allowed to grow in the goatee zone - being any facial area below the bottom lip.

3. There is to be no joining of the moustache to sideburns.



For Canadians, do an honour to our recently fallen Federal Opposition Leader Jack Layton, who survived prostate cancer, but succumbed to another cancer two months ago; and everyone who knew Jack Layton knew he loved his stache - and would most likely have been very supportive in what capacity he was legally able to have towards Movember this year, had he been around to see it.

We call it No Shave November here. A lot of the guys "celebrate" it here at work. I know they will especially since we just lost a very young coworker to cancer.

I can grow a decent beard, but my mustache grows in very light... so I just look like someone who'd abduct your kids in a van.

Clearly not of Semite ancestry. We can grow full beards in 20 minutes. Just ask Leonodis over there :-)

Of course, that also means we have to spend a ton on shaving supplies and body wax, so it ain't all good :-)

How'd that work out? Does it stay off or just lay dormant for a long time? And how much did it cost?

I actually lucked out with a groupon and it only cost me $200 for 6 sessions. Just finished up my 6th session. I still have hair but nowhere as thick/much as it used to be. I actually got the front of my neck done too because I tend to get a lot of ingrown hairs from shaving there... that kinda hurt.

I probably need about 3 more sessions to be hairless. So I might look into another groupon or biting the bullet and paying regular price at the place I was going.
