The game stars Pit (which most of you are probably familiar with) who is an Angel warrior of the Goddess Palutena. The story is a little wild from here on out. While the quest at first seems straight forward - battling Medusa's underworld forces (in a story that seems as direct as Starfox vs Andross and his minions), it is soon discovered that there is a whole lot more going on; and that this part of the story is actually fairly minor. There is a great deal of friends becoming enemies, and enemies becoming friends in this game.
Overall, the dialogue and humour is very similar to games like Disgaea. Like the DS remake of Disgaea, the dialogue is fairly constant throughout the game, 100% voice acted; and it is very entertaining, probably the most entertaining dialogue I have come across in a game.
Single Player
Generally comes in two forms: Flight Mode and Ground Mode. The story reasoning for Pit having limited flight mode is that his wings burn up if he flies too long. Think Starfox, except better; every single sky mode portion in the game is more entertaining than the Katina battle in Starfox 64. Also, there is a lot more action and ability to shoot things down because of the greater number of enemies, and also the greater control precision, and better weapons than Starfox; essentially you move around with your analog, and you can aim with the touchscreen controls. There are many different types of scenery, flying through extremely stormy waters, over cities with huge battles going on within, through outer space (these are very pretty), through the pits of hell, etc...
The ground phase is essentially a fast paced Zelda, but with lots of shooting. These generally end in a major boss battle. The best way to describe them would be Zelda, with WAAAAY more violence, and a way faster pacing. There are many different sorts of vehicles that can be used too, including mechs which are similar to Magitech Armour from Final Fantasy 6.
Occasionally there are sequences where the player controls other characters; the most striking of these is Magnus, a powerful sword wielding human whose melee attacks are significantly more powerful than Pits.
Attacks and Weapons
Basic Attacks: You have powered shots, rapid fire, and different sorts of shots when combining with analog stick movement. There are also Melee attacks, depending on where you are in proximity to the enemy you can dash attack, or just go in for the beatdown, etc...
There's also a great many different spells and such that you can use, some might cause giant explosions, or massive laser beams, heal you, power up your defense, charge your weapon up, etc... Although the number of spells you can bring into battle is limited, and they can only be used a limited number of times (although they recharge over time, and I think death speeds this a little).
There are hundreds of different weapon types, you can fuse weapons together to make new weapons, and there are dozens of different abilities (maybe hundreds), and a large variate of different amounts of power. In example - one crusader sword might be a 5 star melee and 2 star range, and another crusader sword might be 1 range and 0 star melee - then there might be different sorts of skills involved (like +5 overall defense, Petrify 3, +2 range defense, Health +4, Evasion +3, etc...). Essentially, there are millions of different possible weapons you could have with a wide range of behaviours.
Multiplayer
After nearly two weeks of playing, I think I can say that this game replaces Mario Kart 7 as the best multiplayer gameplay experience on 3DS. It also comes along with a very fun single player campaign (which I am not through yet, I am on Chapter 19). While it is certainly beneficial to have very powerful weapons, a character with an insane weapon will suffer some consequences (not enough, I find, to balance it in favour of using weaker weapons, a more powerful weapon is always better; but the player will lose more points when killed, and people who kill that player will gain more points - however, that won't matter if you're racking up 5 kills a minute when a player with a weak weapon is lucky to get 1 or 2). There are two basic modes, light vs dark (team vs team) and free for all. You can set the number of players, and you can also play with all CPU characters.
Multiplayer is incredibly hectic, similar to Smash Brothers with 4 players, except there are 6 players. The power ups and such scattered through the levels make it feel very similar to Smash in some ways - although I find it is far more engaging. I had a battle against someone while riding two parallel rails - and it reminded me a great deal of Obi-wan vs Anakin when they were on the pieces of debree skimming along the surface of the magma; although this time with pure intense action and without the over-dramatic talking.
There are 4 other people at work I play this game with, so I am getting about a half hour in a day. Local multiplayer is somewhat more fun than online, but I find that to be a general truth with all games - including PC ones like Starcraft. This game lends itself very well to local multiplayer; in my opinion, better than Mario Kart, because multiplayer is much more productive if you are looking to get more hearts (the currency in the game) and weapons (multiplayer battles drop items, spells, and weapons to the people who play them).
Essentially, multiplayer and single player advance the game forward.
Great game, overall the best thing available on 3DS, and I am curious to see how Smash Brothers 3D will top this. Since, in my opinion, this is considerably ahead of any Smash game (Sakurai headed up the development of Kid Icarus, and his main series is Smash).
I think Kid Icarus has the potential to be huge. Although currently it is more of a 3rd tier type game, like Metroid and Starfox; but I think it could advance beyond that in the future.
