That is to say, Romney is either a non-Mormon posing as a Mormon for show, or a complete hypocrite... As is the case with many Christians.

A friend of mine is a Mormon, so I took it upon myself to read the book of Mormon, as I have read many different religious scriptures and texts in the past. After reading the book, I find it very difficult to reconcile the moral compass of Mormonism with Mitt Romney. Particularly, his anti-socialist stance is the polar opposite of the pro-socialist stance in the book of Mormon, which blatantly preaches that all people should be equal in money and possessions.

I also, years ago, read Ayn Rand's books and philosophy - a poorly written and intellectually weak mockery of some of Nietzsche's work where he discusses how Selfishness can be a virtue, but adds that it is only for those whose selfishness can be beneficial to the race - and this is where his moral compass lies, in Objectivism - not Mormonism.

This brings up another point - many of my liberal brethren are mocking and criticizing Romney based on his Mormon faith primarily. This intolerance, in my opinion, is a harsh betrayal of Liberal tolerance, and instead strongly reflects conservative brand intolerance. It also demonstrates ignorance, because in all likely-hood, not one of these people know what Mormonism is, or have read even one page of the book of Mormon.

You don't have to be intimately familiar with a religion (or read religious texts) to experience some degree of intellectual intolerance. While I personally find all fundemental religious believers to be a bit batty, Mormons take the cake. I'll generally give a pass to people who incorporate religion into their lives as a matter of culture or community but pretty much *ALL* Mormons as a group creep me the hell out. The Church of Latter Day Saints was about as exclusionary as it got while I was growing up. If you wanted an all-white community, with pseudo 1950's values lauded and practiced, that was your outlet - regardless of what you believe you read & reconciled in your readings. The whole thing was always...plastic and creepy.

As for people mocking Romney, meh...I haven't been paying enough attention. If anyone brings up "God" as part of their platform, no matter what religion, I think they deserve a degree of mockery. Government is a place for facts and intellectualism, not beliefs and scripture. Otherwise, I don't think being a Mormon is anything more than an easy cheapshot.

I think I should wear that as a shirt, just to hammer the point home:

Jesus
HATED
rich people!

Or rather, he felt pity for them, since Jesus didn't really "hate" anybody. And he understood that people who hoard money and riches are the kind of people who don't care that there are poor people who are suffering. Rich people cause the poor to suffer.
