Well, the companies are now trying to get the movies on DVDs as soon as possible to protect against pirating (and to milk the consumers with two releases), so you're getting so many movies with barebones DVDs or pathetic specials released early. It's not giving the directors time to make a good one (for the few who care to, that is). So, I agree with him, but it's still a surprise to hear a director flat out come out and say that.

I believe your off-side comment about milking the customers more than the former reason on piracy. A helluva lot more people will be sucked into buying two DVDs more than they'll ever lose to piracy, and they know it.

Then again, they are losing big time to the rental industry, and they don't seem to know that one. The consumers and the rental companies get more bang for the buck by buying, say, 15 DVDs and renting it to 150 people. The rental company is down by 300 bucks, and gains double that. Meanwhile, the DVD producer loses quite a few potential customers that may have bought the DVD, but already watched it, along with the special features. If they were smart, they would be doing some serious investment in NetFlix to get their money back (and then some).
