This is a diablo 2 clone that's actually good. The Force levels are way more important than any equipment you ahppen to have. Your allies are pretty dumb but thankfully their stats are pretty pumped to make up for their lack of intelligence. The voice acting is okay besides Meryl, who is spectucularly bad on the same level as Sue of Grandia 1. It's pretty fun to just put up a 2handed sword and start cleaving 100 men or monsters like Berserk, though most of the time you've to be more careful unless your Force levels are really pumped that you don't have to worry about damage.

Oh yeah and the main character is named Max. How more old school can you get?

I loved the first two Shining Force games on Genesis, but by your description they changed the gameplay. Those two were probably my favourite strategy RPGs until FFT/OB64, or Fire Emblem, whichever I discovered first; either way, they were GOOD games. Voice acting isn't really a concern of mine, though I have bad associations with Voice Acting + Grandia.

However, it would be a good time for me to get the new Shining Force game, I just replayed the original two on Genesis back during the summer.

Why do we have two threads on this game?

That's a question for Mr. Wang...
