Micronations

This is actually pretty neat. Lots of new "nations" are springing up around the globe as people near sparsely populated or poorly governed regions promptly declare themselves to be sovereign.

That sounds like a real life version of the Silent Fleet where a Japanese guy hijacked his own nuclear capable sub and declared his sub is now a nation and expects to have the national border of 15 or whatever nautical miles around wherever his sub is, and unlike those guys his sub can defend his nation of Yamatoland or whatever it was called. That does bring to the question what makes a nation recognized? If those guys in the link had a nuclear silo in their area they'd probably get recognized as a nation, or at least have a much better shot at legitmancy, but does that mean what makes a nation sovereign is just military power? But if not you could declare a mall as a nation.
