Charged with a crime for cheering at high school graduation

The "school to jail pipeline" for parents & families too? This is screwed up. We need to rein in the police state in this country or we'll end up in a situation where we're all either in prison or are prison guards. Some people both. We'll have to take shifts so we can alternate back and forth.

Superintendent's a piece of work. Amazing how he could make the graduation ceremony about himself, though. According to the NYTimes article Lakaydrian couldn't even hear them from the stage, so it really couldn't have been all that loud. Charges should be dropped, and the superintendent should be mocked in every graduation he attends for the rest of his life. "If you shift too loudly in your seat you will be prosecuted" "If found making any noise while black within a 20 mile radius you will be prosecuted."

I don't think I've ever been to a graduation where there wasn't at least 1 very overexcited family yellin like they're in the super bowl for their kid lol. It's really harmless, fuck that Superintendent.

I hate to bring up race in the discussion, but you can't tell me with a straight face that this would ever happen to a white family. If you're in charge and you put down some rule "Ok guys, no loudness during graduation" I get that. If somebody goes overboard, and you take the time out to kick them out of the fucking graduation, I think that's shitty for the family, but whatever. The fact that they took it all the way to "ok we need to prosecute these...people, for this." That tells me that they viewed them as less then people. Is it that important to you? Would you do that shit to your own family? They just see loud niggers at graduation and want to make an example out of them, because they can, and because they don't view them as equals.

Considering this is happening in Mississippi it's hard to believe that race doesn't play into this at least somewhat. It's glaringly obvious in the region how often blacks are made example of. Not even conservative media, from what I've seen, has hopped onto the superintendent's side of things. He's just a whack job. Hopefully it gets thrown out ASAP. Failing that, he'll look worse and worse until he loses his job and the county or whatever will hopefully drop charges from there.

What the fuck? Can the police really do this? Because that is incredibly fucked up.

I think you just hit the nail on the head.

I dunno...is it fair to call it racist or is the superintendent simply prone to treating parents like kids? I mean, isn't Mississippi like 50% black? Then you have this blinged out dad, obviously being asked leave (so he was already being disruptive), then shouts for good measure on the way out.

If he is being a dumbfuck to start, gets booted out, then acts the fool on the way out too (the filmed part), maybe he deserves it...its an utter lack of respect to both the institution and the other parents/students.

I dunno...either way, the fine from the police is an overstepped boundary...

Superintendent dropped the charges. Mother of the graduate is looking into pressing charges of her own. If it were me I'd say the hate mail he's inevitably gotten and the fact that whenever you look him up for the rest of his life this will come up would be enough, but if she wants to be just as shitty as he was back to him, I say thank god we live in a country where this is possible. (sarcasm)
