Saw the latest chapter in Alice on Borderland, people are playing hardcore Blackjack (if you run out of chips you die). So the 'smart guy' starts with 5 chips. He has a 12, and deal has a 7 showing. He hit 2 (14), 3 (17), and then hit again (21). The dealer shows over a 9, hits a K and busts. If you notice the dealer would've won had he gotten any of the 2, 3, or the 4 that the 'smart guy' got, but instead the 'smart guy' won.

I don't know about you but if I got 5 chips to play with and losing them means I'm dead, even standing on a 12 looks like an attractive option (even though it's the wrong choice). Certainly hitting on a 17 is not what you want to do when your life is on the line. Heck that's something you wouldn't want to even when your life isn't on the line unless you've the X-ray vision implants like the guy has in Austin Powers.

I found that only the Hong Kong guys know how to do gambling stuff, probably because they actually know how to gamble. No it's not like you'll actually find anything deep about gambling there, but they know what works and what does not. For example an exercept between two martial artist playing Texas Hold 'Em goes like this:

Guy A draws AA
Guy B draws 27
Both guys have equal chips

Guy A says all in
Guy B says bring it on
The flop shows A K Q J 10, which results in a draw.

So both guys flip over their card, and Guy A says who the heck goes all in with a 2 7? Guy B says a last boss tier character like him doesn't lose against unimportant fodder characters, whether it's martial arts or gambling. See, at least you can't argue against logic like that!

Gambling that depends almost totally on randomness should be removed from entertainment altogether. I'm mostly talking about poker. WHAT ARE THE CHANCES THAT HE PULLED THE PERFECT CARD? God! It's fucking written. Probably a hundred fucking percent unless it doesn't serve the story for him to win. This is not entertaining. Winning with a straight flush or something isn't really entertaining either - the most exhilarating moments I've ever had in poker involve missing my hand but winning with a jack high card or something.

It's basically the Stormtrooper effect. The more unlikely something is going to happen the more likely something is going to happen.

At least in that scene from the HK manga I actually thought the guy with 27 was going to draw like 2 2 2 7 7 or something like that, but no it was actually draw. There's no way the 'last boss' guy was ever going to lose to the fodder guy, but at least his justification for not losing was amusing (last boss don't lose to fodder characters!)

I had problems with this when watching Casino Royale. Everybody was talking about how awesome this movie was, but I just couldn't get past the really bad poker cliche shit in the game.

"If only you knew his tell, you could win the game!"
*splashes $100 million in chips into the pot* (an offense that could get you kicked out of any real casino)
"[INSERT MONSTER HAND HERE] gets beat by [INSERT MONSTER HAND HERE]"

Hint: you're never going to get a hand with quad anything beat quad anything. And don't even show me a goddamn Royal Flush. It is a product of myth and rumor.

One time I was on a Japanese website that was selling a Texas Hold'em game, it says they attempt to stimulate the epicness of movies so you got these special powers you can use like TAKE ONE HOLE CARD FROM YOUR OPPONENT (so you have 3 hole cards and he has 1). It's like why don't you just have IDDQD for royal flush? At least that's kind of amusing.

You mean like Omaha? I swear that game was invented just because people got too used to the odds in Texas Hold'em.

Oh i totally agree, that was the corniest scene ever. I dont care how good you are, you arent going to fold quads in almost any situation. Its not like Bond bated anyone to make a bad call, everyone had sick hands that no one would ever fold. Really stupid.

I'm not familiar with Omaha but it's like say your opponent has AA and you have KK, you activate this and now you have AKK and your opponent has A as his hole card, so you have 8 cards to make a hand versus 6 for your opponent. I'm pretty sure these are used like fighting game super moves, like you'll see a large portrait of your character when you use it since it's probably going to totally own your opponent, unless he has an equally cheap move to use.

Well, Omaha isn't unbalanced, but the odds of getting a great hand are much higher. You have 4 cards (not 2), with the usual community cards. But, you HAVE to use exactly 2 cards in your hand and exactly 3 cards on the community. Because of the increased cards in your hand, stuff like two pair, three of a kind, flushes, straights, etc. are very common.

So, in a way, it's "god mode" for Texas Hold'em.

Well, I can understand the appeal to have cooler hands since one pair versus nothing isn't exactly very exciting.

I'm pretty sure the said game I was looking at, that ability was on the boss characters. If this is Street Fighter it'd be a Super Combo thing. Probably takes time to charge up too, or something. The sad thing is that this is pretty representative of how to make a gambling game from Japan.

I saw this mahjong game where the equivalent of the 'Shin Akuma' boss starts with 2 of the best hands you can get in Mahjong and auto wins first two rounds, leaving you with like exactly 1 point to play. Though the walkthrough shows the guy just inputing a cheat code and get the equivalent of Royal Flush for the next 2 hands and win (your winning is based on the quality of the hand, e.g. Royal Flush might be worth 10K point while one pair might be worth 5, though having exactly 1 point left means even a super weak hand can beat you before you can form a good hand).
