I notice it's pretty common theme to have a story with some kind of super power dart board, i.e. character X has fire and only he has this ability, and so on. Whether it's Marvel Super Heroes or One Piece or whatever there's plenty of examples of such a system as the underlying world system. Now that in itself is fine but it seems like all too often whoever comes up with this system assumes they're far more creative than they actually are. Spiderman and Batman, for example, don't exactly have a power that's competitive against Superman. Someone who has the power of rubber isn't going to beat someone who have the power of lightning. I understand for the sake of plot sometimes you have these crazy matchups but there is really nothing credible when you've a guy whose power is Godmode loses to some trivial power. I don't mind this happening once or twice because people want to see Batman fight Superman or whatever, but a lot of time this nonsensical scenario is repeated over and over and you begin to wonder what kind of idiot loses with godlike power against very mortal opponents.
It almost feels like people confuse nonsense with creativity. If you have the power to control say, time, and you lose to someone whose power is to shoot fireballs, there's something really wrong with your battle strategy. It doesn't matter how clever the fireball shooting guy is. If you fight a guy who can control time and this is the only power you have, you're probably screwed. It's true that most supervillians are very dumb, but it seems like fans can be just as dumb to actually believe it is normal for all powerful villians to be dumber than a rock.
