Two things: first, it looks more vivid; second, it the motion bits where stuff moves from one part of the screen to another have the slow-motion illusion due to the lack of motion blur.
This film is now 30 years old.

After 30 years I think it's still one of the best animated films of all time. The 80s is a very underrated time period in general due to its association with a weak Disney and a large volume of action figure cartoons - but it also had Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Kiki's Delivery Service, Secret of Nimh, All Dog's Go to Heaven, and Grave of the Fireflies, alongside Akira - all of which hold up very strongly against the past 30 years. In my humble opinion, these are all stronger than the Disney Renaissance films.
