David Lynch, who created some of the most interesting TV shows and film in the 1980s and 1990s. More or less, after blockbuster and other formula film productions took over the industry in those decades, Lynch maintained a more interpretive/artistic element to his films. Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, and Twin Peaks are what he's best known for.
As a near lifelong smoker, he had been in poor health because of emphysema, which he had been suffering in recent years. His family reported that he died shortly after being forced to relocate from his Sunset Boulevard house because of the LA wildfires.
If you haven't seen his work, and like interpretive/art film, or even interested in it. His films are a must watch. Mulholland Drive especially.
