Pearl Harbor impressions.

<div style='font: 9pt Arial; text-align: left; '>I was a tad disappointed with Pearl Harbor. It reminded me a lot of Titanic; the focus was on the love story for an hour and a half (it's a 3-hour film, BTW). I would have liked it more if they toned down the romance and had more scenes with the Japanese and American militaries trying to outguess each other.

That said, the attack scene was excellent. More brutal than I thought it would be. Pure Michael Bay goodness. Makes me wish I had walked into the theater 90 minutes late.</div>

Michael Bay's a racist...

<div style='font: 10pt arial; text-align: left; '>Really, in practically every film he or Jerry Bruckheimer does, there's a black guy who speaks funny and a little dog for comic relief.

Pearl Harbor was better than I thought, I thought the actual attack scene got the horror of the situation across very effectively. But it was cheapened by the fact that the ending GLORIFIED war, which is totally contradictary to the little speech that Danny's dad gave at the beginning.

Plus my friends and I were playing "count the locals." This might surprise you, Michael Bay, but there are polynesians and asians living in Hawaii too...</div>

<div style='font: 11pt "Copperplate Gothic"; text-align: left; '>It's made the love story one of its principal objectives. This gives the film more of a 'chick flick' factor, therefore increasing gross. Wise choices.</div>

<div style='font: 11pt arial; text-align: left; '>My first impression: the movie is 183 minutes long and all the girls come out crying. That's the first sign of a bad movie</div>

I noticed the same thing about a lack of Asian population at Pearl Harbor.  However, I don't agree with your assessment that the movie glorified war in the end.

<div style='font: 9pt arial; text-align: justify; '>It's easier to glorify war if you're winning. The Dolittle invasion, as far as actual damage goes, was completely and totally worthless. It was intended to give people hope. Before that there were a lot of folks running around thinking we were done for, what with a titanic chunk of our Pacific fleet missing and all. A tiny little ineffective battle to give people some hope doesn't glorify war. I'd say it actually emphasizes how ridiculous it can be.

True, but it almost makes the victory sound quick and clean...I think I'm more upset over the shallowness and bluntness of this movie.

<div style='font: 10pt arial; text-align: left; '>I think historical war dramas should make you think about war, and all this one really did was scream at the top of its lungs "war is bad, people die, but it's okay because the United States won in the end."</div>

<div style='font: 10pt arial; text-align: left; '>Heh, I don't actually think he's racist, but it's still bad even if he's just narrow minded. The whole film is very nationalistic and ethnocentric, and that's dangerous considering a good portion of America will use this and films like it (The Patriot, etc.) as a damn history lesson.</div>

Certainly there are similarities. They're both more than 3 hours of power, for one. There have been many high grossing chick flicks long before Titanic, though.
