So, what are the highlights of 2014? Was anyone surprised by anything? What was good?

I really enjoyed Alien: Isolation. I had a lot of frustrating deaths, but I found any time that I wasn't paralyzed with fear inside of a locker that I was having a really good time just soaking in the atmosphere of the game.

Dragon Age - Inquisition is probably where I sunk the most time this year. The writing for your companions is EXCEPTIONAL. I really felt like Mass Effect 2 to me. There was some overarching bullshit that was happening, but I was much more concerned about getting Cassandra her next romance novel.

Dungeon of the Endless. It's pretty neat.

I still have a bunch of games to get to, but these three seem to be the ones that I really enjoyed in the final part of the year.

Wasteland 2 - one of the first major (millions of dollars) Kickstarter video games to get released. Proof that it can be done both right and well on a scale that involves full-sized dev studios. Personal pick for my GOTY in a subjective way but...

Dragon Age: Inquisition probably deserves it more just out of sheer scale and, well, relative polish for a RPG. It's buggy, unoptimized, and imperfect but it's pretty damned polished for a RPG.

Honorable mention to Transistor for being beautifully crafted. Walking Dead Season 2 and Wolf Among Us for further proving that games where story is 90% of the motivation to play can be powerful and (mostly) fun. The Banner Saga deserves to be listed too, if only for still managing to be a game I remember well despite having the blue-ballsiest "Fuck you" cliffhanger in a game with promised sequels ever.

1. Crusader Kings 2 - initially I got into this with the more recent DLC expansions, particularly the recent Charlemagne - to hold me off until Civilization Beyond Earth launched. This game massively outshines Beyond Earth for me. I consider it the best strategy game currently available.

2. iOS Kairosoft library. These are a bunch of games which copy elements of classic games from Dragon quest, to Sim Tower, to more recent town builders. Their games are usually called Something Story; Game Developer Story was a recent one that was popular among gaming review communities, and may be their most famous. My personal favourite is one that is not branded in this way - It's called Dungeon Village. You manage and expand a town for heroes in this one.

3. Mario Kart 8 was easily my biggest home console game. When it comes to Mario Kart, there is usually debate as to whether the latest version is better than the last. To me Mario Kart 7 on 3DS was clearly better than any past Mario Kart game, but this one is so far ahead in quality and gameplay that it is indisputably the best Mario Kart game of all time. It is so good.

4. Dragon Quests on iOS, there have been several releases: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8. I think 5, 6, and 9 may have trouble given that Nintendo has the publishing rights to those three outside of Japan - although those may have expired. 7 is the one I am particularly interested in as it is the only Dragon Quest game that I have not finished. It is kind of the black sheep of the series as well. DQ8 has easily aged the worst, it is stunning graphically, but the gameplay is very slow compared to the other dragon quests - I usually don't have the time to accomplish anything meaningful in a play session. My preference is for the older titles.

5. Rune Factory 4 was an interesting game I played on 3DS; although I found myself less interested with the adventuring and more interested with the Harvest Mooning, so I think Story of Seasons coming out next month will be a big one for me; Story of Seasons is Marvelous Entertainments own version of Harvest Moon without Natsume's involvement.

6. Not really a 2014 thing, BUT, I got a Vita early in the year, and I have been playing the crap out of classic Playstation games including Xenogears, FF7, and FF8. I have a Persona game for it as well, but haven't opened it - I also have a 3DS Persona game which ai haven't played yet, so I don't know which to do first.

7. A casual game on 3DS called Tomodachi Life I found kind of brilliant. It is a relationship/town builder where characters get together, have kids, and pass on their genetics. Sometimes with REALLY hideous results. As the player, you login each day, do stuff to help, play mini games, make money and buy content. All within minutes usually. It's been compared to animal crossing, but Animal Crossing is not really casual as the player really needs to sink time into it in order to do it correctly.

8. Shovel Knight was my biggest surprise from 2014, this game was so much fun that I feel like it is a steal at 15 bucks, but it was recently on sale for 10 on 3DS and Wii U. There is an expansion coming out soon. There was another game released around this time called Child of Light, it is marketed like an indie title, but was made by the biggest dev studio in the world Ubisoft Montreal, and it is overrated and terrible in my opinion. Shovel Knight, on the other hand, this game is truly a lot of fun and a very well crafted game. There was a lot of love put into it and it shines through.

9. Fantasy Life is my most played game, I play multiplayer with my wife all the time, and I have exceeded 100 hours on it now. I have some complaints about it due to it not having the same sort of smooth multiplayer integration that Dragon Wuest 9 had - but is on more advanced hardware; 3DS vs DS. While I feel Level 5 could have done better in some areas, the game has still captured me for a very long time. Several of my co-workers play this one a lot too, some much more than me.

Shovel Knight - It blew my expectations away and I already thought it was going to be great! Just an amazing game all around.

Mario Kart 8 - They did an incredible job with this one. I have sunk a ton of time into it with my friends, just so polished and fun all around.

Tales of Hearts R - The first game I played on my new Vita, and it may have topped Symphonia as my favorite Tales game. I will have to give it some time to cool down before I can say for sure.

Ys - Memories of Celceta - Another Vita game, and a great reimagining of Ys IV, which never officially came out in the states. So great, espically for someone who loves the Ys franchise.

Smash for 3DS/Wii U - This is another one where I expected it to be great, but it was better than I thought, espically the 3DS version, I didn't think it would play as well as it did. The Wii U version is tons of fun, and we regularly set up for 8 player matches.

Transistor - Another masterpiece by Supergiant Games, the guys who made Bastion. Need I say more?

Sucks that The Witcher 3 has such high requirements for video cards. I bought this thing for $120-$150 a couple years ago this April and for that much money it shouldn't be bumping up against requirements for another year or two. This kind of makes me nervous about if this game is going to be as unoptimized The Witcher 2 when it got released. Just going to have to hope that the rest of my computer being at or above the recommended specs is enough.

My video card now is literally one model under the minimum requirements lol

Minimum System Requirements

Intel CPU Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz
AMD CPU Phenom II X4 940
Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 660
AMD GPU Radeon HD 7870
RAM 6GB
OS 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1)
DirectX 11
HDD Space 40 GB

Recommended System Requirements

Intel CPU Core i7 3770 3,4 GHz
AMD CPU AMD FX-8350 4 GHz
Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 770
AMD GPU Radeon R9 290
RAM 8GB
OS 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1)

It's on my list, but I really must call out Shovel Knight again. This game was fantastic, and one of the best 2D platformers ever made.

Odd year this year. Wasn't really excited about the big titles at all. I played and enjoyed Advanced Warfare and it may bet he best one since Modern Warfare 2 but not memorable. Given up on Assassin's Creed for a while. As much as I adored Borderlands 2, I just didn't feel up for the Pre-Sequel. I think at this point I'm just gonna wait for the GotY this year and get it. Destiny? I don't have anything against it but I just wasn't into it. The fact that neither of the next-gen systems kept me out of those couple of exclusives and the far-too-many remastered editions. Even the 3DS didn't have a ton of good titles.

Aside from Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros, I spent most of the year playing older titles that had built up (Dragon's Crown, DuckTales Remastered, Mario 3D World, Mario Galaxy 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, etc)...when I had time to play, that is. There are some titles from this year that I wanna play, like Alien: Isolation and Shadow of Mordor, maybe Dragon Age Inquisition. I'll get to them I'm sure later in the year when I'm forced to buy a Metal Gear 5 adaptor (i.e. the PS4). By then I'm sure the GotY Edition of Mordor will be out and cheap and I'll get Isolation with better graphics. And there were a few big downloadable titles like the ones Mac mentioned I may go for.

Maybe it's the kids this year being old enough to make me play games they want that made me not pay as much attention but I just wasn't into many of the big titles in 2014.

That's pretty fucked up. I just meet min specs in 2 areas (2500k 3.3 & 570). They are both overclocked, so I am hopeful I will get passable gameplay...I can't see how they can take it too far...I mean, it's planned to be on console too, and those specs suck.

As for 2014, I've been largely unimpressed. Been revisiting old games (Tactics Ogre, Arcana, Buck Rogers, DW3, FF4j, etc). Also been messing with indies alot, like Project Zomboid, etc. South Park tSoT was the only real standout AAA game. I also will give a nod to Wasteland 2 and Divinity OS, though I have yet to finish either (plan on it).

Skyborn. Project Spark. Neither were 2014 releases, but those were my high points of the gaming year.

I'm still waiting for the consoles to re-embrace the AAA JRPG.

I didn't love 2014 mostly because my loyalties are with the XBox camp and DirectX still and 2014 was undeniably a misstep for them. I also poured a bunch of time into League of Legends, and I have to admit that was probably a mistake; fantastic a game as it is, the hatred and spite in the fanbase from DOTA days is still undeniable, and the game rarely makes me happy.

However the One just had a fantastic Christmas and Windows 10 is actually looking immensely promising. So hopes for 2015 remain high.

As for The Witcher 3 - yeah, specs are high, but on the plus side, it's never been a better time to get a new desktop. (A "couple years" has ALWAYS been time enough to kick a video card into the back rank, by the way.)

You can get a fantastic i7 with a GeForce 720 for literally $750; you can get the full recommended specs for Witcher 3 including the 770 upgrade for under a grand.

Desktops are really slashing prices to compete with tablets and all-in-ones and laptops. I'm really happy with my new i7.

(The real question for me is why people think Witcher 3 is worth upgrading a system for; maybe others can shine light on that.)

Yeah a $150ish card has never lasted me less than 4-5 years (not counting the ones that broke before I started exclusively buying EVGA). They certainly never started bumping up against minimum requirements. I can only assume that the console versions are just ridiculously gutted in terms of graphics and NPC population. Can't hazard a guess as to why they haven't lowered things down for the PC, as well. CD Projekt Red isn't really known for releasing games that are properly optimized for low and mid grade PCs, but what they do have a good track record for is patching. Safe bets are on this trend continuing, I imagine.

I forgot about the South Park game. It definitely deserves a mention, as well. I think I found 2014 largely disappointing in terms of games. There were some gems, but I don't think I've ever spent a year going back to old games quite as much as last year.

Edit: PC Gamer article about the delay. The two things the dev thought of to mention were performance and controls issues (specifically, the way the horse is controlled, but PC Gamer also mentioned that they "couldn’t play with a mouse and keyboard for the demo, as that mapping is still being tweaked."). On the bright side, the dev said that he preferred playing the game on a M+KB setup.

Is Witcher 3 actually worth all of this?

I can see why they're recommending a hot video card, but still...is the GAME any good?
