  • Epic PR Disaster @ Mighty No. 9

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

The "Masterclass" trailer is acquiring one of the worst receptions in YouTube history, with over 32,000 dislikes and only 4,000 likes.

The publisher made the mistake of inserting a line about the game containing “Stuff that’ll make you faster and stronger, and make the bad guys cry like an anime fan on prom night” - apparently not realizing that the fanbase for anime and the fanbase for Mega Man-style games are basically one and the same.

Also, the rest of the trailer is basically the same old "Woo! Yeah! I'm wild!" stuff that Penny Arcade once so well skewered as completely scripted and off-putting.

Also, apparently their effects team really shat the bed on the explosions, to the point where fans are comparing them to badly rendered slices of pizza.

Inafune and several of the other devs have lambasted Deep Silver, their publisher, for basically ruining all their PR - to the point where the Sonic The Hedgehog dev team took advantage of the spectacle to roast the entire project royally.

It is a car-crash-on-the-side-of-the-road level spectacle replete with rubbernecking at this point.

That was pretty underwhelming. I haven't been following this game closely but I'd be annoyed if I'd donated money. In the end though, the important thing is the game itself. Graphics don't look that great. Hopefully they beef that up. Gameplay looks fun. Basically, they need to polish the graphics and effects.

I guess they're trying to prove that all publicity is good.

When you consider you can get Azure Gunvolt for around $10 on a sale in Steam, it's hard to see Mighty No. 9 possibly live up to expectations at $19.99. While Gunvolt has its own share of problem, it is a fundamentally sound game that is obviously catered to the Megaman audience.

I can't figure out what marketer or publisher made the mistake of thinking that Mega Man fans...don't intersect with anime fans.

I mean, come on now.

Megaman's helmet is kind of goofy in itself. If the series is about being cool, he'd never have that helmet to begin with.

This marketing doesn't surprise me. Inafune has expressed a deep distaste for Japanese culture, so making fun of anime fans and such is within his MO.

He also left Capcom because he felt there was no incentive for innovation or change. He wanted to go out on his own in order to achieve that. Mission accomplished.

Ah, sweet schadenfreude!
