So Sega released this trailer recently for a new Sonic game, pure 2D goodness, now this normally wouldn't inspire much confidence in me especially after Sonic 4: Episode 1 & 2, but this game is seemingly being made by some people that actually understand Sonic gameplay and are responsible for the recent HD versions as well as some not-so-talked about ROM hacks that turned out pretty well.

When the developers were talking about the development of the game they went on to say this is basically what Sonic would have looked like if he had come out on the Saturn/Playstation era instead of chasing 3D like the entire industry was attempting to do at the time and failed more often then not. Basically a proper/true sequel to Sonic 3 & Knuckles but 60 FPS, more animations, etc etc, and...it looks good.

Wonder what other games with a budget that were pretty prime in the SNES/Genesis era would like like on modern consoles with a proper budget in 2D.

For some reason the 3D environment Sonic games just never worked for me. I think it's different from say Mario or Zelda because the point of Sonic is that you're supposed to be running through a lot of stuff and with less freedom of exploration you don't have to worry about if you miss something most of the time.

No HD Sprites/animations. Great games, boring graphically.

The issue is that the 3D Sonic games have been generally better than the post-genesis 2D Sonic games as well. I think Sega just can't make them like they used to anymore.

Although Sonic Colours was a fairly decent stab.

I'm a little off-put by the pixelated graphics for a developer-released games. Back in the PS1/Saturn days, games looked better than this. You don't wanna up it to New Super Mario Bros level cleanliness, I get it. But to keep it purposefully pixelated? They're trying Mega Man 9 all over again
