It's definitely a rental.
My girlfriend thinks I'm on crack coz she's absolutely loving this game. Then again, she never even heard about this game before so she wasn't hyped about it.
Graphics are the best on this side of the 128 bit fence. Shenmue still looks better.
As far as fighting games go, its gameplay is inferior to its predecessor, Tobal No.2. In fact, I'd say if this game had no story mode, it would really suck. It's just my opinion. Yours may differ.
HOWEVER this game engine has an enormous potential for a better sequel. It's not a BAD game, it just misses out on the fundementals of traditional fighting games. If they had taken DOA's attack buttons and put it into this game, it would be the best fighting game ever.
A button to disengage from one opponent to another would have helped coz when I wanted to punch another opponent, the AI had already chosen another opponent for me to attack(which caused me to face the wrong way from the most lethal of the enemy's character). And highlighting the opponent you're attacking would have helped.
The pressure sensitive buttons are the ones that determine the varying attacks which is not a good a idea, in restrospect. Why? Coz when you're in the heat of battle, conciously telling yourself how hard to press the buttons takes the fun away.
Now....I know they're making a sequel. I can bet it's gonna be better than this one. Like I said, this game engine has potential.
