  • As Seek's heart falls, I'm forced to wonder... how would this game have sold if it HADN'T been a "mature" game? I gotta say Rare's got balls for taking the chance, though.

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

<div style='font: 11pt "EngraversGothic BT", "Copperplate Gothic Light", Modern; text-align: left; '>It's all Nintendo's fault. They keep pushing and pushing a kiddie system (N64) onto people and then expect their (very) limited mature audience to buy this game. They're better off producing Pokemon and Superman clones.</div>

<div style='font: 11pt Modern; text-align: left; '>Well Mature titles can succeed. The problem with Conker is it wasn't advertised at ALL, the only time I saw it was during South Park.</div>

<div style='font: 14pt Agatha, Modern; text-align: left; '>...but I think Sine's right. Most games don't get advertised on TV much and it doesn't seem to affect their sales drastically. I think there were two problems with Conker. One is as Sine said, the mature userbase is probably a hell of a lot smaller than the mature userbase for the PSX or even the Dreamcast. The second problem is that with the next generation Nintendo system just a few months away, I imagine a lot of people are passing on games for the N64 so they'll have money for the Cube. After all the $50-60 gone to Conker is a fairly hefty chunk of the cost of the Gamecube.</div>

<div style='font: 11pt Modern; text-align: left; '>Well I'd agree with you but then you look at Paper Mario which went and sold well. When I say Conker had no advertising I mean it had NONE, it wasn't advertised in your average game magazine it was in playboy.</div>

<div style='font: 11pt Modern; text-align: left; '>The game's mature factor screwed it over in advertising, Nintendo when back to it's old ways and backed down, which sucks because it's a pretty good platformer.</div>

<div style='font: 14pt Agatha, Modern; text-align: left; '>...like not advertising Conker in Nintendo Propaganda...errr...Nintendo Power. It would ruin the kiddie image that the brainwashing pamphlet...errr...magazine has. But it doesn't make any sense not to market the game in the other gaming mags like EGM and LamePro etc. Advertising it in Playboy actually would have been a good thing had they not neglected the other, more traditional, outlets.</div>

<div style='font: 11pt Modern; text-align: left; '>Hehe, I liked Nintendo Power until issue 50(Liked the Link/Mario/Metroid/StarFox comics). Then the Playstation came out....that was a wrap.</div>

<div style='font: 14pt Agatha, Modern; text-align: left; '>...but after a while it was blatantly obvious that the stupid thing wasn't worth it. It used to be a good resource for stage maps, cheat codes, hints, and that kind of thing, but then it turned into just another Nintendo press release outlet. What amused me sometimes were all the Japanese games that they would mention or show in the magazine (mostly in the SNES days) that would never come to the US. DBZ Budoten 2 and 3 were in there, so was Dragon Quest 5 and 6 as well as so many other ones. It's kind of funny to go back and look at them.</div>

<div style='font: 12pt Arial, Modern; text-align: left; '>The N64 itself has a higher percentage of million-sellers than the other two systems from its era, none of which are Pokemon games. And SUPERMAN? Ummm, yah, I'll pretend you didn't try and use THAT as a Nintendo bash ;-)</div>

<div style='font: 12pt Arial, Modern; text-align: left; '>But see, any gamers who are diehard enough to start planning for GameCube (legitimately) are gonna be the exact type that'd never miss out on Conker. The casual kiddie/gamer won't know much about GameCube aside from "some thing they talk about online, alot."</div>

<div style='font: 12pt Modern; text-align: left; '>I'd have chosen to screw the game rather than risking it hurting the image. Most people think along the lines of Rare = Nintendo and cute animal mascots = Nintendo. It doesn't matter how many signs 'Definitely not for anyone under 18' you put by Conker, if you see it at a traditional gaming mag you'd assume it's a Mario kind of game.

I think it's more or less Rare's problem of not realizing the kind of platform they're on. Nintendo would not hesitate a moment to cut off all of its ties to Rare if it means threatening its pre-teen market.</div>

<div style='font: 11pt "EngraversGothic BT", "Copperplate Gothic Light", Modern; text-align: left; '>One, at one point the Pokemon series was the best selling games in 5 out of the Top 10 games AT THE SAME TIME! Two, Superman sold a helluva lot better than Conkers.</div>

<div style='font: 11pt arial, Modern; text-align: left; '>It's like Disney saying, "Our problem is our exclusive child audience. Let's make a porno in order to expand our viewer base." It's idiotic. You don't widen your audience by going from one niche market to another contrasting niche market. Appealing to two opposite ends doesn't mean you draw in everyone that's sitting in the middle, it just means you draw in the minority on the poles.</div>

<div style='font: 12pt Arial, Modern; text-align: left; '>We're talking about N64, though. There have been only three real Pokemon games for N64, none of which were top sellers. And Superman, well, it sold pretty poorly in general.</div>

<div style='font: 12pt Modern; text-align: left; '>RARE? What's Perfect Dark and Goldeneye? Perfect Dark was targeted at the same audience as Conker and was a top seller. Also, if you look at RARE games on N64 they are almost all targeted at a teenage audience</div>
