* Director/Producer - Hironobu Sakaguchi (This is the first game he has directed since forming Mistwalker; and he is holding no punches, has stated he is putting it all into this game, as though it were the last game he would ever develop)
* Composer - Nobou Uematsu (although some of the music sounds like it was ripped right out of Xenogears, and since Nintendo is publishing, it is not out of the question that Mitsuda has had contribution).

Gameplay Description: Battle System
Battles occur similarly to the FF12 system:
* No transitions to battle, they engage enemies as they appear on the screen
* The player has control of the main character, while the allies attack in auto-battle form
* Player's character will attack automatically unless given other orders by the player.
* Player controls movement of the main character, and can also evade and block
* While the main character is attacking, the player may select additional battle techniques and spells from a side menu
* One of the abilities is called "Gathering" which draws the enemies towards the main character, and in the process allow other characters to cast spells and such.
* Gathering also charges limit breaks while it is active
* Resurrection occurs when the Main Character touches a fallen allie
* Spells are a little more creative, for example, there's a method of spell casting which creates an area of influence, when it is heal, all characters who enter the area will be healed; when it is ice, an enemy who runs onto it will slip and fall.
* The gameplay and battle system was the first focus of development, Sakaguchi has only done this twice in Final Fantasy's History, the first time with FF1, and the second time with FF7.
* There is online co-operative play for up to 6 players. There is also a competitive play component.

You are only just figuring out now that The Last Story's title is based off of Final Fantasy? You might have been unaware, but Sakaguchi was the creator of Final Fantasy.

I stand corrected, I just completely forgot about it.

I never said I was surprised that the title of the game is derivative of Final Fantasy. Given how Blue Dragon is a knockoff of Dragon Quest and Lost Odyssey is a knockoff of Final Fantasy, the unoriginal title makes sense to me. Plenty of good games have shitty titles though, so all the best to Mistwalker on this one. I'll probably never play it.

I don't see anything wrong with the title of the game, personally.

The main reason I posted was because of the revelation of Sakaguchi actually directing, Uematsu (my favourite videogame composer) doing the music; and the battle system that seems to be very interesting compared to most RPGs of late. It is akin to an advancement on the FF12 system, which I found to be good, but in need of some tweaking. The Last Story looks more solid and more interesting.

What I hope doesn't happen to this game, as happened with FF12 and 13, is that it becomes TOO focussed on battles; and not enough on the story, towns, and characters. RPGs lately have also been creating worlds that are far larger than they should be; it makes for a lot of emptiness. Only the DS RPGs have seemed to escape that lately. Although, currently it looks very promising.

Actually, it's called "The Evil Within"

Ugh. Is that all Mistwalker is? A "spiritual successor" VG company?

Spirital successors are important, at one point publishers but their way into an IP and make demands the the IP becomes muddled, when a developer makes a new game that looks similar to an old one but they have their creative freedom left in tact, it's something worth getting excited for.

Fucking survival horror keeps getting gutted, I for one am looking forward to The Evil Within.

Hahaha, this thread is ancient, I'm surprised I remembered it. Mikami has no affiliation with Mistwalker whatsoever. BL was attempting a shot at spiritual successors; by making a mock-version of a Mikami spiritual successor. I just thought it was amusing that Mikami actually DID come up with a spiritual successor whose title resembles Resident Evil.
