Hey all! I started a new YouTube show, literally just got the first episode up earlier today, and I would love your feedback and support! The show is called Classic Gaming for the Modern Gamer, and my first episode is about The Guardian Legend for the NES.

Looking forward to any feedback you can give me!

Just in time for Nintendo to start claiming your ad revenue!

1) I'm not doing this to make money, just for fun, and I dont even have monitization turned on.
2) Nintendo could have ordered anything with their content taken down, but they didnt. Their move was completely legal and I have no problem with it.
3) I posted this here to try to get some feedback, of which I have gotten none so I dont know why I even bothered.

I'm not going to derail this thread but in response to #2....bullshit.

As for feedback, what were you hoping for...? You weren't specific. I watched it, just cause it was yours (the game is of no interest to me). I'd like more hot girls in bikinis...not what you were looking for?

Ok. First, I've never understood LP's. I've never watched a full LP show, aside from the one you linked. It seems to me LPs are all about personality and banter -- as such, I guess I found your show a little too bland and informational. /shrug

Oh sorry sir, I wasn't a huge Guardian Legend fan! And the let's play wasn't terribly exciting. :(

The fact that Nintendo decided to take money from their loyal fans doing playthroughs of their games is bullshit imo, these are the same crazy sons of bitches that have gone out and bout their shitty Wii U, Nintendo should be finding a way to reward their faithful, not line their pockets.

dear M'k'n'zy

I watched your video last week. I had seen the box art of this game that you highlighted before, but only as boxart displayed at a local video rental business. I had never played it and found your synopsis to be actually quite enlightening. Much like the Screened.com Besties, I found your video to be very informative and I really liked how you showcased the strongpoints of this game that I had only seen boxart when I was a kid.

To cut to the short-and-sweet, I thought your video was just fine. I would only give you the criticism that it should be much shorter. I'm not sure where I would personally cut from, as the easy section would be the music... but I found that section to be very good! I really like that you showcased the music, since I really liked the music! All I can say is that you should try and keep it under 5 minutes, but I have no constructive ideas on how you should get it to there.

Mknzy's style obviously isnt the twitchy, fast scene switching type review/show that all the ADD kids like nowadays. I watched the whole thing and thought your knowledge on the game was incredibly in depth and the script was laid out very well so that, even though it was long, it did flow.

However, i'd expect a majority of people to not like it. Its too calm for the mass audience, but us geezers that you are aiming at (guh, i'm 32!) should appreciate the information and nostalgia.

Haha, kinda funny since I've known you for a decade, but that's the first time I'd seen your face.

Also, I didn't know you did some of the LP videos (as seen on the right side).

First off I want to apologize for the snappy, angry nature of my last post. Our sewer backed up that day and I was in a foul frustrated mood and I let it taint what I said, so I apologize and if I offended anyone im sorry.

Thank you for all the feedback so far. Im just getting started on all this so ive been looking for all the feedback I can get so I can improve. Most of what ive been hearing ive heard echoed here and two main points have come up.

1) lack of personality showing through in the video. This I agree with 100% and I think this is mostly attributed to it being my first episode and me being somewhat nervous and foucsed on making sure I announciate my words clearly. I believe this will improve over timeand as I get more comfortable with myself and what im doing (that 15 minute episode took about 40 hours because of game recording, multiple takes, and learning how to use the software more) but this needs to improve and will be a focus for me.

2) music section went way too long. All told I think its about six minutes of a 15 minute video. In truth future videos will likely be closer to the 10 - 12 minute mark because this episode got bloated by my letting that part drag. Its a cool segment but should be limited to maybe my favorite three tracks.

I really do appreciate everyones feedback. I will let people know when the next episode goes up so we can see if ive managed to improve any.

Also @sine I agree that is pretty amusing when you think about it lol

Watching other people play games is just not very exciting unless it's one of those rigged situation like 'Iron 6 in my starting city in Civ 5, what are the odds of that?" type of video. I'm not even sure there's a way to balance the fact that authentic videos are generally boring, and anything that's interesting is faked 99.9% of the time.

I like watching let's plays!

The Giant Bomb quicklooks are my favourite. I'll watch any game they do that I do not plan to play - as I don't want it to spoil my experience, or maybe it will convince me to look into a game that I wouldn't otherwise.

LPs are all about the personality of the people doing them.

As some feedback:

I like the informative section, and these are the sorts of videos I like to watch on IGN and Gamespot. Just packing in as much information as possible, and praising portions of the game that are just a lot of fun or good.

The music section, what I would do is split it up, segment the video out with 3-5 second intros for each section, and perhaps add in some background music from the game at appropriate portions.

Also, your series focuses on a topic I am interested in. Whether it be because of Nostalgia, or the style of game. I tend to prefer older games to newer ones, particularly RPGs/Adventures - the trend in the past was simple gameplay to perform a large variety of tasks. Nowadays the trend is complex gameplay to perform a small variety of tasks.

One other thing, I like your approach. Most videos I see lately focusing on classic games tend to be from guys trying to be like The Angry Nintendo Nerd, but generally just come off sounding dumb. It's good to see some high brow content on classic games for once.

RE: The Music

Why not have that playing at a very low volume when you speak about the game, and then go into a segment about it, but only let it run for a minute or two?

That's exactly how I feel. I don't want to try to emulate or copy anyone else out there but to do things in my own style. I do need to get more energy into my videos, and I think I am starting to do better in that with my Let's Plays, so hopefully there will be a marked improvement in CGftMG ep 2.

BTW as an announcement, there are 8 more episodes of Let's Play The Guardian Legend left, and once that is done I am going to LP Xcom Enemy Unknown and let people sign up to be soldiers in the game. I hope some of you will sign up! I'll do my best not to get you killed! The announcement video and sign ups will go up with about three episodes of TGL to go.
