Heh, that was good. And I liked this one for anyone thinking of getting one of the new systems. Can't remember if it was posted here or not but it's well done

I was going to post a Hipster Kitty pic, but Memegenerator seems to be bogged down.

I can honestly say that paid DLC has resulted in me purchasing far fewer games (especially 0-day DLC). DLC is the main reason I refused to buy Mass Effect 3 :p

DLC is just price segregation. It's kind of like how the ROTK games cost like $100 in Japan because there are relatively few hardcore strategy game fans so you want to charge more per unit knowing these guys won't really buy alternative. Of course even though you're filling a niche the game still can't totally suck just because it's in a niche. There's nothing wrong with DLC itself if the game actually delivers something that's worth it. Chrono Trigger was $100 back in the SNES era and it was considerably more expensive than other games of that time but it was still a good buy because it was that much better as a game. Of course right now with DLC you get no guaranteeds there. It's not that paying $50 for a game and then $20 for another character is a ripoff. It's that character you paid $20 extra for better be some legendary figure in that game genre and if they can deliver that, that's perfectly fine to charge this kind of money. Instead you usually get another copy & paste deal.

No. CT was $70, which was similar to other SNES games at the time. In fact, there was a lot of buzz about how SNES game prices were way too high.
DLC is not price segregation. Games have a set release price that is normal for its type. For non-indie games, the price is $60. Period. DLC and pre-orders and collector's editions are just ways of adding more to the base price, while maintaining the illusion of the game being the same price as others.

Maybe in the US but up here in Canada, you were lookin' at $90 or $93 + 15% tax, over $100
DLC is becoming a way to take what would be included features that are non-essential (usually) and removing them and getting people to pay more. They can often feel like a piece of the game was taken out unless the game itself is fully complete. Are the expansion in Borderlands nickling and diming? No, the game itself has tons in it and feels complete on its own. The DLC is just a way of getting even more and I'm OK with that. The other extreme is Assassin's Creed 2 where they took 1/7th of the game out (the 2nd and 3rd last sequences/chapters) and made you pay extra. That's when DLC becomes horrible

I think it's worth pointing out that the video uses the New Luigi U game as an example. You can purchase this game separately at retail for $29.99, or you can purchase it as an add-on for New Super Mario Brothers U for $19.99. A fairly good price for one of the best and most variety packed 2D platformers I have ever played. Even storywise it was fairly awesome; from the start it is obviously different, but once you realize that that Luigi murdered Mario, you know it's gold
