Maybe I'm naive but I feel like the gamer, and specifically the PC gamer can only benefit if Valve succeeds.

Valve moving PC gaming from the small, niche market where it is now to the significantly larger market attached to a TV would be great for the industry and for all PC games. No one ever complains about more competition
The real questions are: do the games change because you'd be using a controller mainly instead of a keyboard? And what is gonna bring the non-PC gamers to the Steam Box?

Big Picture games are all optimized for controller play. This includes first person shooters since the Steam controller offers enough precision to compete with a mouse and keyboard setup without resorting to auto-aim. Still can't imagine RTS games ever making the leap though.
I definitely signed up for a chance to receive a controller and a Steam Machine for beta testing. I can't see buying the appliance, but the idea of a Steam OS intrigues me. Windows 8 was certainly a step backwards for PC gaming. If I bought a PC with Windows 8 pre-loaded I'd probably go out of my way to get 7 or make the transition to Linux.
