  • early access games on Steam

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

So I've noticed that this thing has been going on for a while and it seems like early access means you get to pay full price for something that is likely totally buggy and in development and was never going to be good in the first place. It's almost like the opposite of a closed beta which is generally when you get to play for the game that's unlikely to change significantly (because if it did it probably wouldn't make the deadline to begin with). Do anyone here try these early access games? I mean sure if it's something I know I'm going to get anyway I might as well, but usually it's more like something I've never heard of with even less assurance than normal that the game will be playable at full price.

Kinda burnt out on early access games. Even trusted developers can fuck it up. I forget who it was, but someone who'd released a proven game was developing a game that was selling on early access. They made the mistake of depending on the income generated from early access in order to continue development and when that well dried up they just had to officially release the game unfinished.

inXile did early access in this respect correctly with Wasteland 2. While the game was certainly buggy (and released that way) and unfinished for the duration of the entire early access period, they had secured the funding they needed to complete the game through Kickstarter. Early access income was used to expand the game further as it was in development.

But really, I think I'm done with early access. Even when done correctly, it's just disappointing playing an unfinished/unpolished game. I think I would only recommend early access purchases to people who get off on helping the development process and don't mind losing out on the occasional $10-$20.

If it's a game that there's a 100% chance I'm going to buy at release, then I could see going in at early access if they're doing that thing where the game sells cheap and slowly goes up in price as it inches closer to release.

The price tag for all the early access games sure don't seem like they're discounted for buying an unfinished product. I'd be fine if it's like 50% off and maybe you pay the other 50% when the game is actually done but paying 100% of the price for something that isn't even done seems pretty dumb. The way I figure is that I'm supposed to be getting some value back for what's equivalent of a beta testing and maybe it doesn't have to be like a MMORPG where you just get to play the game for free for a pretty long time (depending on how early you got in) that's close to 100% complete but since MMORPGs don't have a problem with this model I'll have to assume getting free stuff back for my time isn't asking much. Doesn't have to be all free, but it shouldn't be the full price.

A lot of Early Access is garbage, and what's worse is the bad ones are burning any good faith people might have had towards the practice before with games that actually needed to get out of the door and start making a profit so their developers could eat.

Minecraft worked extraordinarily well.

I feel that Gnomoria is a very solid attempt.

I can't say much bad about Banished other than it turned out not to be a game I enjoy.

Space Station DF9 was a disaster.

I do think those are the only ones that really stood out for me. It's a mixed bag, I don't mind being the guy that takes one for the team, but overall I do think you need to check on these games with a couple of people before jumping. Some of them have great concepts, and terrible execution.
