1. Crusader Kings 2 - initially I got into this with the more recent DLC expansions, particularly the recent Charlemagne - to hold me off until Civilization Beyond Earth launched. This game massively outshines Beyond Earth for me. I consider it the best strategy game currently available.
2. iOS Kairosoft library. These are a bunch of games which copy elements of classic games from Dragon quest, to Sim Tower, to more recent town builders. Their games are usually called Something Story; Game Developer Story was a recent one that was popular among gaming review communities, and may be their most famous. My personal favourite is one that is not branded in this way - It's called Dungeon Village. You manage and expand a town for heroes in this one.
3. Mario Kart 8 was easily my biggest home console game. When it comes to Mario Kart, there is usually debate as to whether the latest version is better than the last. To me Mario Kart 7 on 3DS was clearly better than any past Mario Kart game, but this one is so far ahead in quality and gameplay that it is indisputably the best Mario Kart game of all time. It is so good.
4. Dragon Quests on iOS, there have been several releases: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8. I think 5, 6, and 9 may have trouble given that Nintendo has the publishing rights to those three outside of Japan - although those may have expired. 7 is the one I am particularly interested in as it is the only Dragon Quest game that I have not finished. It is kind of the black sheep of the series as well. DQ8 has easily aged the worst, it is stunning graphically, but the gameplay is very slow compared to the other dragon quests - I usually don't have the time to accomplish anything meaningful in a play session. My preference is for the older titles.
5. Rune Factory 4 was an interesting game I played on 3DS; although I found myself less interested with the adventuring and more interested with the Harvest Mooning, so I think Story of Seasons coming out next month will be a big one for me; Story of Seasons is Marvelous Entertainments own version of Harvest Moon without Natsume's involvement.
6. Not really a 2014 thing, BUT, I got a Vita early in the year, and I have been playing the crap out of classic Playstation games including Xenogears, FF7, and FF8. I have a Persona game for it as well, but haven't opened it - I also have a 3DS Persona game which ai haven't played yet, so I don't know which to do first.
7. A casual game on 3DS called Tomodachi Life I found kind of brilliant. It is a relationship/town builder where characters get together, have kids, and pass on their genetics. Sometimes with REALLY hideous results. As the player, you login each day, do stuff to help, play mini games, make money and buy content. All within minutes usually. It's been compared to animal crossing, but Animal Crossing is not really casual as the player really needs to sink time into it in order to do it correctly.
8. Shovel Knight was my biggest surprise from 2014, this game was so much fun that I feel like it is a steal at 15 bucks, but it was recently on sale for 10 on 3DS and Wii U. There is an expansion coming out soon. There was another game released around this time called Child of Light, it is marketed like an indie title, but was made by the biggest dev studio in the world Ubisoft Montreal, and it is overrated and terrible in my opinion. Shovel Knight, on the other hand, this game is truly a lot of fun and a very well crafted game. There was a lot of love put into it and it shines through.
9. Fantasy Life is my most played game, I play multiplayer with my wife all the time, and I have exceeded 100 hours on it now. I have some complaints about it due to it not having the same sort of smooth multiplayer integration that Dragon Wuest 9 had - but is on more advanced hardware; 3DS vs DS. While I feel Level 5 could have done better in some areas, the game has still captured me for a very long time. Several of my co-workers play this one a lot too, some much more than me.
