Nintendo has been re-releasing Wii games on the Wii U E-Shop lately. The first was Super Mario Galaxy 2, which is awesome - and Punch Out - that I already remembered sucked due to really archaic controls when using a controller, and broken motion controls.
Recently they released Metroid Prime Trilogy which is currently on sale for 10 bucks on the EShop. So I decided to buy it, most people loved this game, I wasn't too interested in it when it first came out.
My first impression on the game again was that the controls feel a lot better with the Wii Remote and nunchuck, very slick. With the original Gamecube controller, they were extremely sluggish and clunky; frustrating when fighting fast enemies. The controls are vastly improved in this version, although the first person perspective still creates a lot of problems, this game would have been MUCH better in third person.
The game begins with Samus landing on a research space stations orbiting a planet called Talon. It's filled with lifeforms in storage containers, and the place has also been attacked by Space Pirates.
As I went on, there was very little combat, most of the space pirates were already dead. There were TONS of locations that Samus could scan for interesting info... Or so I thought I remembered. The truth is about 1/10th of them actually give some sort of interesting information, the rest of them are just very trivial "This stage 1 larvae is dead." "There is weak radiation coming from the husk." and things like that. Yet the player is tempted to still scan everything due to information that is actually interesting, even interesting trivia about the wildlife of Talon, and even secrets that improve the game. Needless to say, after 15 minutes of this, I was developing a large headache.
After a few battles, I realized the game was not balanced for controls this slick... They were balanced for controls that sucked on the Gamecube. It felt like cheating, as enemies were offering no challenge at all.
Even the huge boss was a simple task. I remember this one being far more difficult.
At the end, there is a countdown, that begins. So I start running and rolling down corridor after corridor. Then I hit this part where Ridley comes and destroys something, unfortunately, I hit a dead end here... Not really a dead end, it was a 4 foot jump, and somehow Samus was unable to make it; the same Samus who in previous games flips through air at about 30 feet!!! The remaining three minutes passed as I attempted to jump higher than the 3 feet I was able to do, and I blew up... When I went to hit continue, I was about 7-10 minutes back! So ends my latest attempt of Metroid Prime. Out of curiosity, I checked youtube to see what I did wrong, apparently Samus in Metroid Prime CAN'T jump very high, I was supposed to use that weird electric whip thing to swing across.
I suppose this is the sort of game you get when you let the Turok Dinosaur Hunter guys make a Metroid. Although Turok Dinosaur Hunter was at least a bit more of an interesting setting. I really wanted to like Metroid Prime, but I find it incredibly empty and boring.
Things I did like:
1. Nice feeling controls despite suffering from the first person view.
2. Nice presentation.
This game does several things I really don't like:
1. Jumps that you can't make, but should be able to.
2. A headache's worth of nonsense scans which you still have to do because of the few good scans in there.
3. It's frustrating not being able to see your character on the screen when moving around.
4. Enemies are bland.
5. Setting is empty and bland.
6. Game is too dark in visuals, makes me feel like yawning.
7. No other characters around, adds to the blandness of the environment.
I am not a first person shooter fan, I'm more of an RPG/Simulation/Adventure/Strategy fan, so this game probably isn't aimed at people like me.
