Thread about the game Corpse Party.
I just bought this on Steam and it's another Visual Novel type game with light survival horror gameplay. I played through the first chapter (of five) and it seemed pretty well made for an RPG Maker game originally made in the mid 90s. It's surprisingly dark for an RPG Maker game and it's pretty heavy. Surprise, surprise it stars some high school kids who call unwanted occult attention to themselves and get stuck in this otherworldly hellhole where they're split up and a certain amount of the spirits are angry and conspiring to kill them. Bad endings abound.
The game is definitely pretty gore-y. There are the corpses of dead school children who were trapped before you basically everywhere and they're all accompanied with some depressing note and a description of how they were murdered.
The music and sound in the game is a big part of what makes the game good despite being decades old and made with RPG Maker. I can't really stress how good the sound is in this game. There's one part in the opening where one of the kids jumps up and sits on a school desk and it sounds EXACTLY like it does in real life. It's little touches like that and a similar example of a schoolgirl stepping in some guts with a disgusting *squish* that really immerse you in a game that because of RPG Maker could arguably have been trash. Also the voice acting cast (the game is only partially voiced in Japanese) is well done and they went out and got professionals to voice the game during one of the several times the game has been re-released over the years.
From what I can tell so far this is the kind of game with a 10/10 atmosphere 9/10 story and 6/10 gameplay.
