Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

So the sequel to Human Revolution comes out on Tuesday and has been getting decent reviews. The PC release surprise, surprise seems to be hounded by some performance issues, but nothing that sounds too alarming. The developers said they were going to take another two weeks on DX12 support, so that in itself tells me that they just didn't have enough time to get the PC version up to par. Still, at the very least the graphics options that are (or should be) expected in a PC release are there.

The one major complaint that troubles me is that the story is not very well done. I didn't go so far as to spoil myself on the point to point quality of the plot, but this remake of the series (including Human Revolution) has really taken to the theme of augmentation as the new racism. Apparently this iteration of the game has chosen to make the main point of this game be that perhaps prejudice is wrong.

Really going out on a limb there, game devs.

We'll see how my 1080 FTW handles it. I've been playing most games at 4K for a while now, but I can always go back down to 1080 on my 65" TV or 1440 on my 2nd monitor if need be. :O

A good game marred by a horrible microtransaction shop.

I have only completed the tutorial mission and all the available hub missions at this point in the game and I'm at 10 hours played.

Lots of fun. Lots of things to do.

I have this rule...if a new game launches with: a) a super deluxe bundle or b) tons of addon content; then I ignore it at least until its on sale / in the bargin bin.

Aye, upgrade video card every 2 years, CPU/Mobo every 5 years. Still get a pretty penny for the old stuff to help fund the new.

I finished this in about 34 hours doing all of the side quests. I didn't even read all the books or e-mails so if you're a completionist there's a lot to do here.

I kind of agree with the story not feeling particularly up to snuff though. The original Deus Ex and even Human Revolution (even Invisible War iirc) all gave you a sense of closure/completion at the end of the game. This game really didn't have any. There are a lot of loose threads. As what is still technically a prequel, bringing up loose threads that get closed in the original Deus Ex would be one thing, but they really just go fucking wild here with references (and even major characters) where nothing really happens.. They're just established for fucking later. Not cool.

I still think this is a really great game. I'd say even with the performance issues it's a 9/10 game. But with the ending the way it is it's probably a 7.5/10 Deus Ex game. The levels are all satisfactory. The game only having one hub is a little disappointing but it's handled fairly well. The hub is also very dense - it feels as if 2-3 hubs worth has been packed into it.

So long story short it feels like either the important bits of the story is going to get finished here by the DLC... which is bullshit... or that they're gunning hard to make this an ongoing series. Which isn't entirely unwelcome (I wouldn't mind a new Deus Ex game every 2-4 years), but leaving a game with this many unfinished plot points isn't very Deus Ex, so to speak. It feels like the game should have gone on another 20-30 hours. I guess on the plus side it left me wanting more? Not the worst thing ever to do with a game, I suppose.
