  • Shantae: Half-Genie Hero

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

So this is another kickstarter I backed around the same time I backed Mighty No 9($3,845,170 fucking dollars), while Mighty No 9 destroyed any motivation I had to ever back a project on Kickstarter, this game has given me renewed faith(It raised $775,000 in comparison)

If you're never played a Shantae game before, it's basically a platformer where you control a half-genie girl that uses her hair as an attack and can take on the forms of animals to assist with platforming and stage exploration, this particular game is closer to a Megaman X style structure where you clear to a boss but then can come back to the stage later for hidden secrets/power ups. The games have never been a huge mainstream success but that's mainly been due to budget and being restricted to handheld systems.

This game is goddamn wonderful, every single aspect of it, I'm hard pressed to find something I dislike about it. The characters are charming/funny. The music is fantastic, the graphics and backgrounds and sprites are great, it looks wonderful in motion. The difficulty is a bit easier then past Shantae games, but then I'm a bit above the difficulty curve when it comes to playing these games(I think I've died twice in my playthrough :P)

Anyway I just had to gush about this game a little. It's a fun video game ass video game, nothing too crazy but it's $20 on steam(comes out in a week for non-backers) and if you put it on your wishlist and see it on sale I damn near guarantee you'll enjoy playing it.

Edit: It's actually on PS4, Steam, Vita, Wii U, Xbox One as well, so pick your poison.

That game looks fantastic!
This is the direction I like to see with 2D platforming. I like the Animal Transformation DKC nod.

I've watched people play Shantae games at GDQs and they look pretty solid. Not really my cup of tea but they seem good for what they are.

Maybe I should have gotten this instead of Gunvolt. At least it doesn't look like a game where it constantly reminds you that you suck at doing speed runs.
