  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

<div style='font: 12pt Modern; text-align: left; '>Found this from the Magic Box

The game industry could shrink down to tenth of the current size. There are an overwhelmingly large number of developers out there who know nothing about the business of games. Venture capitalists in particular. He thinks the industry will undergo a major shakeout from now to next year.

He believes gameplay over graphics, last year's Dragon Quest VII is a perfect example, a game with below average graphics (but with great gameplay) outsold all other games that have superior graphics.

The industry is going toward network enabled games, but then again, most of the developers still know nothing about video games, probably because they can't come up with better ideas themselves.

Games should have nothing to do with movies. Players get bored faster than ever before, and in-game movies also jack up the development costs.

The PlayStation 2 is a well worth DVD Player, but not as a game console. It's too difficult and costly to develop for the system. It's a major obstacle for developers.

I don't feel like commenting this too much, but I'd just say that if Dragon Quest 7 was called something like Joe's Adventure 5 it wouldn't sell anywhere near of what it did. If they call Final Fantasy 9 something else it wouldn't sell that much either. The day I believe believe Dragon Quest 7 is simply superior to everything else is the day it can outsold the FFs in America. Speaking of which, does Enix even plan to port the game here?</div>

<div style='font: 14pt Modern; text-align: left; '>Heh...., the one thing I like about Mr. Yamauchi is that he speaks a lot of common sense(it's harder than you think in the games industry) and he's a conservative, who won't act like a snake.</div>

<div style='font: 12pt Modern; text-align: left; '>Consider his recent outburst about "We don't need Square, Gameboy shall rule the world. All my competitors suck and they will die horribly." It seems to me he's placing a lot of his own opinion in his statements. I mean, I've never heard of people who refuse to buy a console because Square was developing games for it.

Developing game isn't easy, to be sure, but if it's not profitable then people wouldn't be doing it in the first place, and seeing that games are still being developed, I think it's safe to say that they're at least making a decent living.</div>

<div style='font: 12pt Modern; text-align: left; '>Yamauchi said that? I have a feeling he's in bed with Enix, and why not, they've sold 15 million games on Gameboy Color in the last year, personally, I'm looking for a 4th game in the Soulblazer series,</div>

<div style='font: 12pt Modern; text-align: left; '>He's always very aggresive in his comments, or maybe it's the translations. My opinion stays the same, he wants Enix to develop exclusivly for Gameboy Advance,</div>

<div style='font: 14pt Modern; text-align: left; '>I think the Square thing was all about getting them on the gamecube. To be honest..., the GBA will dominate the industry w/ or w/o Square. The NGC need's Square on the other hand to win. So he is making it so that if Square wants to work on the GBA, they need some games on the GC. I agree about the last statement, but there have been an awful lot of layoffs lately, and not much in the way of profit.</div>

<div style='font: 12pt Modern; text-align: left; '>The revenue from royalty is a small portion of a company's profit, and in the case of GBA there isn't even competition so it doesn't make sense for Nintendo to court Enix in GBA, because people will buy their games (i.e. Pokemon) anyway. Though it'd make a lot of sense for Enix to court Nintendo sell their Dragon Quest Monsters or whatever on the GBA.

Though having Enix for the Gamecube would help a lot on the Japanese front.</div>

<div style='font: 11pt Modern; text-align: left; '>Actually I guess you could say both statements are true, it's all about the direction Nintendo sends they're system, kiddie market = less intrest from older gamers. However they've stated they want they're system to be easy to develop for.</div>
