Grandia 2:  Battle against Eye of Valmar is incredible!

<div style='font: 12pt Modern; text-align: left; '>I've been skeptical that anyone can come up with a good battle engine in the stagant RPG systems that can be summarized as Attack-with-everything-you-got, Heal-when-low. But Grandia 2 impressed me in the battle against Eye of the Valmar. To be sure this isn't anywhere close to the end (I'd think), maybe not even that important in the grand scheme of the story, but what an incredible battle! The setting is excellent, at the Room of the Solitude. The X of Volmar music is one of the most appropriate boss music I've ever heard, on par with Aeris's theme in battle against Jenova-LIFE. It's not necessarily the best battle music I've ever heard, but it's relatively easy to make your generic 'good' battle music, a whole different thing to make it appropriate for the mood. It's dramatic but with a detectable since of sadness. Perfect for the theme in the battle against XYZ of Valmar where a tragedy results whether the good or the evil wins.

I won't bore you with too much details, but the battle was awesome. For a while it seems like I was going to lose when I lose Roan, who is my primary healer (yes Milennia has maxed out Healer but she burns most of her MP on maxed out Burnflame/Strikes). If this is a FF game, Skies of Arcadia, heck, almost any other RPG out there, I know I've a nearly infinite supply of resurrects/get all MP back/get all HP back item, but this is Grandia. I know if I can't get Roan back on time there's no way I have enough healing power to last the fight. A few well timed cancels got me the chance to revive Roan. I think I ended the battle with basically 0 MP on both of my healers (Milennia and Roan), 0 SP on all but Roan, and very little HP left on everyone. This is probably the first time in a long while I've beaten a boss with this low in HP without either:

1. Being too underleveled.
2. Boss doing something extremely cheesy. E.g. Lynx casting Black Hole and kill your party instantly. Ramirez using Silver Nightmare 3 times in a row on Vyse. Kuja casting 4 Flare Stars in a row.

Great, now I'd have to go get the Grandia 2 OST just for the Battle against XYZ of Valmar, along with Skies of Arcadia. And as you may see from my Rumination post, I don't have a lot of spare money at the moment... :(</div>

i just played that part this weekend ...

<div style='font: 9pt Arial, Modern; text-align: left; '>Most of the boss battles in Grandia II are excellent. The old RPG trick of having a boss monster attack with multiple living "limbs" or "parts" suits the game's battle system perfectly.</div>

Yeah, I notice the game really tries to avoid having strong hit all attacks

<div style='font: 12pt Modern; text-align: left; '>These attacks made such battles trivial. There's no real point in boss having 5 or 6 parts if you can just H&E 2 times and kill all but the main part with Justin like Grandia 1.

Though I notice there are a lot of powerful hit-all magic attacks out there.</div>

<div style='font: 9pt Arial, Modern; text-align: left; '>It's a balancing act. Elena and Millenia may have spells like White Apocalypse and whatever the other one is, but the SP requirements are so steep that you can only use them 1-3 times per battle.</div>

Are you capable of posting a message like this that doesn't allude to a spoiler?
