Yeah the developers really seem to struggle for any kind of traction with gaming journalism and they don't really have any noticeable past games under their belts. Just don't see anything on social media for this game ever.

Hmmm, never heard of this series before but I figured I'd give it a shot. Hopefully I won't be totally lost because I haven't played the first 3 games. Preordered on PS4.

PS - I will probably play on the PC later, for mods.

I ended up picking up the season pass, too, which is a bit of a risk. Three of the five DLCs for Fallout 3 were garbage with the other two maybe being as good as the worst New Vegas DLC.

I think the Xbox & PS4 versions actually support mods this time around.

They do, but mods require approval from Sony/MS...which I am fairly positive will fuck me over at some point.

Ehhh this kind of sucks. I really hate RPG dialog selection when it only shows me a snippet of what I'm going to say. It's the most annoying story thing Bioware has been doing lately and now Bethesda has joined in. What the hell? It's always done horribly and I inevitably have to quicksave before every conversation so I don't say something wrong because only 5% of the dialog choice is displayed. I don't usually use mods but if someone goes through the game and undoes this then I'd be happy as hell.

I haven't played any of the other Fallout games but many of my friends are super stoked about Fallout 4 so I'm definitely in.

Just ordered a steam key from greenmangaming.com for $48USD (~63CAD), which is a pretty nice savings on the $79.99CAD + tax MSRP.

First time I've used a product key reseller service. Got the key immediately, activated on steam right away, downloading as we speak. Used a pre-paid gift card for the purchase, just in case :P

GMG has a decent reputation. Some people swear by G2A, but I find them shady as fuck and I've heard horror stories. GMG seems legit though.

Okay so it's fun. Some glitchiness but much less than day one Fallout 3/Skyrim. I heard some horse shit third hand about the PC UI being garbage like you couldn't use the mouse wheel and the like but like I said it was horse shit. The crafting UI is god damned terrible. Maybe it's explained better on the consoles? I had to google what I was having trouble with.

The game feels just like 3 and New Vegas. They didn't really play with the formula so far which is probably a good thing.

I'm barely into the game and I've already ran into The Brotherhood of Steel... which isn't in and of itself terrible but I loved how mysterious they were in Fallout 1 and 2. Here they're just like "YEAH BRO WE'RE THE BROTHERHOOD." Immediately. It just lacks a certain finesse. But then the east coast Brotherhood is like that, I guess.

I basically always play male in Fallout games but I like the female voice actress too much. She's the one who did Jack in Mass Effect 2/3 so she definitely has bad ass down pat.

The ghetto pipe guns are really neat and I love how they changed leveling/perks. I also love how they got rid of "energy weapons" and kind of just put guns into the camps of pistols, automatic, heavy, and semi-automatic. They also kind of got rid of skill increases in leveling, opting instead to roll them into perks.... I don't really have a problem with this.

Craps, i downloaded the game, not even thinking about the strength of my computer and i guess it turns out my video card isnt good enough. I have a GTX260 and i guess a GTX550 is the minimum.

I cant even load it, the splash screen comes up, i hit play, then i get an error that says "Fallout 4 has stopped working" and it closes the program. Seems to be a common problem online that some people are having even with the minimum specs, though, so it could be something else entirely.

Always something... i'm getting too old for this shit to always happen to my PC games.

I was going to buy it if it came out for the PS3 but it's not. I doubt my midrange laptop can handle it.

Yeah i wouldnt mind getting a new video card, but since people who have power machines are getting the exact same error as me, im not positive it will help. Technically, the game should load and just be choppy and shitty, i would think. My CPU and RAM is perfectly fine in the range of recommended specs.

I might be at the point where I dont game AAA title anymore... sad to say! Games like this are only tolerable, to me, on a PC. I hate first person RPG's and shooters on a console with a controller, but PC games always have issues running for me lately. I remember I had to finagle Skyrim, Bioshock Infinite, and Far Cry 3 to get working, which I eventually did, but this is getting increasingly more annoying to where I dont care to try and fix it. I can find plenty of other stuff to do.

I'll probs get a refund from Steam and move on.

My computer's pretty ghetto too, though it seems like every game that requires significant firepower are total ripoff laden with DLCs so I haven't had too much issue there. Of course it sometimes can't even do a turn based strategy game like AoW3 let alone Civ 5 (I think the AI is secretly trying to run Skynet or something).

Civilization is a CPU intensive game. All the Total War games are CPU intensive, MMOs like WoW, etc.

Anything where you have alot of logic shit running in the background and a million little CPU controls things doing stuff is gonna be one of those games that tax your CPU.

CPUs tend to last 5-6ish years. I say 5-6 because Intel's i5 2500K & i7 2600K have ridiculously long legs, they're still pretty damn good CPUs in 2015.

Video Card life seems to have shrunk, I don't know if it's because of a new Console Generation starting or lack of optimization from developers on the mid-range or Nvidia's market dominance, but the limit seems to be 3 years atm.

If you see a game recommending a GTX 560, it actually means GTX 660, if you're using anything below that, you're in for a bad time, the drivers don't care about you beyond that point.

Investment is needed to keep your rig up, if you don't want to invest in PC gaming, buy a console. Yes, it's a pain in the ass, the payoff is that you have cutting edge graphics and performance if you're doing it right.

Some people upgrade yearly, but you have to know how to sell your older stuff in a timely fashion and know the market, this keeps the price of upgrading down, but you're potentially investing $300-400 a year on changing parts. Can also keep the price down by keeping an eye on motherboard sockets and what your upgrade sockets are, how much RAM is going for at any given time, etc.

Some people just do the big upgrade every 5 years or so, this is gonna run you $1000-1500, and the system will be top tier for 3-4 years, and you'll feel the itch year 5 because of all the other cool shit coming out. The other cool thing is that your cooling solution, case, and Power Supply can probably survive upgrades for a while longer when you do decide to upgrade and have great warranties, bringing the upgrade cost at the end of that 5 years down.

The first is the X99 Motherboard with a 6-Core Intel CPU, there should be 1 more Broadwell-E series(Like a 10-core from what rumors are saying), so you could hold off if you want that or upgrade later, I don't see the X99 motherboard being a future proof system beyond that, it's a fairly power hungry system and a bit harder to Overclock.

The other is the newest CPU Series from Intel, the Skylake CPU, which is still a 4-Core, but super shiney and new and fast, and there's going to be 2 more revisions of it down the line if you want to upgrade down the line. It runs cooler and is easier to overclock, and is slightly cheaper because it's 4-core.

If you don't like building your own PC, it's gonna run you a $500 mark-up from some PC building company, and if anything goes wrong you have to mail the entire computer back to them for repairs.

Or you could be like Oracle and buy a Laptop, and add another $300 on top of that bringing it close to $2000.

Just for the record: If I was solely out for a gaming rig, I personally would never, ever consider spending what I spent on a laptop. Needing something beefy and portable for work is the only justification I had, and I didn't want to spend like $4000 on an HP Elitebook.

You'll at least need/want a 256GB SSD for your OS and game installs. Then I'd get at least a TB drive for your data storage needs.

Well, having a free weekend, and talking about it so much, helped me decide to just go ahead and get a new vid card. I went to Best Buy and picked up an EVGA GeForce GTX 950 2GB SSC GAMING: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814487158

Popped it in and Fallout 4 started right up, so I got to play an hour and half today. Good stuff, worth the $150 so far. :)

I guess my issue was directly related to not having the required specs.

I wanna say that I love this game but the dialog wheel is still a steaming pile of shit and Bethesda and Bioware should go fuck themselves. Actually Bioware has kind of refined it, Bethesda, what the fuck?

I guess on the plus side I can quicksave during the dialog wheel and lose little to no time on loading, but still.. ugh.

There's no reason it couldn't work like before. The male and female barely even differ and even if they were WILDLY different it wouldn't be prohibitively difficult to transcribe and have it work like before. No, I think the dialog wheel is purely to facilitate console controllers. There is also far less they let us do/explore with dialog. There used to be stat checks and all this shit, but now it's basically just a charisma check and even those are fairly rare.

From what I remember Bioware started using the wheel when they rolled out Dragon Age 2 for multiple platforms. But they refined it fairly quickly after DA2. Mass Effect 2 and 3 always gave you what what was going to be said. Inquisition continued that trend.

This abridged dialog wheel is insulting. It means they think people don't want to be bothered with reading.

The dialogue in this one doesnt bother me too much. I had much more issue with it in Mass Effect, the choice i chose would sometimes not be anywhere close to what was actually said.

Since i pretty much always choose the 'good' option and not sarcasm or anything cryptic its been fine. How much can it effect things really? I'll never even notice.

For context, though, i'm only like level 9 and still doing Minutemen quests, I just helped them clear the castle that i assume becomes their home base. I havnt been to Diamond City yet at all, but am going there soon. I need to get rid of my radiation and figure there is a doctor there, probs.

EDIT: The most annoying thing about this game is the key binding doesnt always work the way you think it will. For example, i binded Use/Enter, whatever you want to call the main open button, to ENTER and it will be ok for those uses, but i still am required to use E to get loot off a dead body. For lockpicking, to turn the lock, you use Left Strafe in all the other Fallouts, and i binded that to the LEFT arrow, but i still have to use A for that only.

They aren't choices though. It's "Good option" "Accepting option" "Sacastic acceptance option" and "Investigate/probing question, but also accept"

That's an exageration, there obviously are SOME choices in the game, but there are also moments IN THE MAIN STORY that are basically "I'm going to kill you" "I'm going to kill you angrily" "Please don't make me kill you but let's not kid ourselves I'm going to kill you" and "DIE DIE DIE"

I checked the play time on my save -- 3days, 9 hours. I fell asleep once and haven't been at the screen the whole time, but I bet I am at 50+ hours solid play time. I actually feel pretty shitty after that marathon and have a ton of shit to catch up on. Anyone a bigger nerd?

As for fallout 4, the dialog wheel does suck, but the voice acting is superb (female at least). Game is pretty solid and the only real gripes I have are:

- Non-combat playthrough not really possible (unless you did a ton of crafting for xp and let your followers fight).
- tiered loot drops based on level
- lack of variety in loot despite mods (I feel like a lot is left for dlc)
- introduction to the world seems forced/rushed (a bit of a let down after the stellar intro)
- romance seems tacked on -- leave that nonsense to bioware and fan mods
- perk tree feels unbalanced somewhat
- hiding clothing crafting behind a faction decision is kinda shitty

the good:

- tons of content and places to explore
- crafting is a cool concept, as are legendary's
- comics granting unique perks is a far better system
- AI/cover has been greatly improved
- I like the new tree system

I didn't mention settlements, which are a great addition. They are not without issues though:

- size limit on settlement kind of sucks. I get that its for performance issues, but hopefully it is boosted on consoles.
- junking system is poorly explained (and items should break down automatically when you transfer to workstation)
- supply lines are poorly explained
- notification of attacks are easy to miss
- placed items (non-workshop generated) do not stay in place and may be looted by settlers
- you should be able to rename your settlers

All said, good game.

Yeah I agree with everything you said. Some perks have always been more useful than others and I'm okay with that.

The biggest non-dialog wheel complaint I've seen outside of here is that the game is too easy, and if you play it min-max then it takes a lot of the difficulty out of the game. I don't really have a problem with that. If you want to impose a difficulty on yourself, go pistol only with no pistol perks or some shit. If you min-max for combat in any Fallout game since the first one, then combat difficulty zeroes out, but you're supposed to miss all kinds of charisma/intelligence related shit. I think Bethesda kind of backed out of that a bit, but they still delivered a world that's fun to explore. A world I'm going to feel the need to visit more than one time? Ehhh, probably not. Twice at best and I'd be listening to podcasts and shit for 99% of the second go through.

Flip - there's a money glitch if you ever feel like cheating. Otherwise just pick up non-common armor, and weapons with mods on 'em off dead bodies and throw them at your companion to sell later. Also sell whatever ammo you don't use.

Until I started using the glitch near endgame, I mainly did ok by only purchasing ammo for guns I used a lot and the occasional stimpack. A lot of the unique weapons sold by vendors are overpriced for what you get.

ALSO: you can quicksave right before you demand more caps for doing a job for somebody, so you can always reload and try again. You can typically get 100 more caps by demanding such twice.

ALSO ALSO: when talking to vendors, drink a beer and wear glasses and/or a hat that raises your charisma. You'll see a discount even if you don't invest in price reduction perks, but I can't remember how the formula works.

So I got my first ending in the game last night

but there was a game-stopping glitch that made it impossible for me to proceed with the quest line (couldn't even find a console command that would fix it), so I just ended up

massacring the entire Railroad, since that's what the Institute sent me to do, anyway. I think why the quest bugged is because I got to the point where the Brotherhood was supposed to raid the Railroad HQ, but I had already killed everyone on the Prydwyn and at the Airport... Funny that the massive fight at the Airport vs. the Brotherhood still worked fine in the Institute's quest line. The explosion when the Prydwyn goes down is pretty awesome :)
I do have a save point prior to making any decision that makes the other factions hostile, so I may go back and try to get the ending for the other two factions as well.

Xenoblade, however, is calling from over on my shelf. Fallout 4 may have to take a 4 month break :p

...has to be the canon choice. How can you possibly kill your son and not take over the faction most capable of good (or selfish) ideals. And I don't think Bethsoft handled the 3 (4 if you count Minutemen) faction story very well...but to be fair, they have never been skilled in plot/story. I think the decision would have been far more impactful had Shaun's consciousness been transferred into a synth -- then the player would have had a more complex decision as to the question of artificial life. Instead, they tried to soften the obvious decision by placing Shaun on his deathbed, but I don't think that does anything to alleviate the obvious choice in front of the player.

As for the Railroad, they are nutcases. They don't give two shits about humans and remind me of a psychotic PETA for synths. I picked them the first time since I was invested but I wanted to shoot them the whole time. BoS isn't much better but I found their storyline more interesting.
As for money, if you don't want to cheat, just build a bunch of water purifiers -- you'll have a thriving business and never need caps again.

For caps... I kinda stumbled on making a crapload (well, at least enough for me to constantly have ~20K while buying whatever the hell I pleased).

I'm not positive what's doing it, but something/someone at one of my settlements is generating a steady flow of fertilizer - I'm thinking it's the scavenger stations I set up in settlements. Plastic is super easy to come by, too, and it seems like a settlements also be generating some, but not at the pace of fertilizer. I also made a point to buy any fertilizer or plastic salvage I came across.

I just made Jet, Jet, and more Jet (fertilizer + plastic), equipped 5 points worth of charisma armor (+9 base) and sold them for 40 caps each.

This fueled my bankroll so I could make top-tier shops in my most populated settlements at the time (by the end, I had ~20+ people average in each settlement). That generated decent income, too, independent of how much money merchants had available to buy my Jet. Combined, it generated more than enough caps for what I wanted to do.

I put the last hours into the main quest and got around to finishing it today. God this game really went downhill once you got to the

Institute. I nearly got the game breaking bug after attempting to side with the Railroad but looked some things up and managed to get the ending I wanted. I wasn't really a fan of theirs. Or BOS... Or the Institute. Hell, even the Minutemen had lost my interest. So basically another meh story from Bethesda around a decent "let's level and explore" game.

I'm not even sure what specifically they got wrong. Sometimes it feels like they're going off of a "What to Include in a Fallout Game" checklist, but they don't really bother going anywhere with a lot of it.

If you're going to make a Fallout game I feel like the essence/hook needs to be in that first objective. Four actually did this pretty well, having you trying to find your child's kidnapper, but what it lacks is a kind of home base to fight for. It (and this is probably a failing of New Vegas as well) tries to establish a home base of some sort with all of its factions (Prydwen, Sanctuary Hills, Railroad HQ, Institute, but they all fall pretty flat in terms of any emotional resonance. It's just a big who cares of choices.

Considering how many years there were between 3 and 4 I just expected... a lot more. Disappointing. Better exploration then 3, but as a whole I think I'll remember 3 more fondly. Hopefully they'll do something interesting with the DLC.
It's too bad Obsidian probably isn't going to do another New Vegas-type follow up. And even if they did, without Chris Avellone it'd probably be garbage. I'll probably give the inevitable Fallout 5 another chance, but at this rate any further Fallout game will probably just be a bargain bin purchase during a sale. There was really no reason to spend full price on this game. I got more emotion out of Undertale and that's like a five hour game.

I'm finally playing through this now, right about to go through the "Glowing Sea" part. I'm struggling with finding enough caps & ammo. In Fallout 3 & NV it was easy enough to explore around and just find it but Fallout 4 seems to have tweaked it to make it more difficult. Is this purposeful to encourage you to build & maintain settlements? I've read that farming (Mutfruit & purified water) in your settlements is the best way to gain caps. Has this worked for you? I've only done the bare minimum for the settlements so far (completed the Sancturary quest). Any other ideas?

Made most of my money selling weapons/ammo (for guns I don't use)/grenades/mines off enemies I killed. Pre-war cash is a nice cash infusion, too. Ammo I would just quick travel around to the various merchants when their stock had refreshed and just buy off them. Ammo is definitely less common. I had to diversify to nearly every weapon type to keep up at times and the games finale took all the bullets for a ton of my gun types despite me going in with several hundred of each by then.

Settlements were never all that useful for me except for establishing supply lines that let me drop shit in one town and pull it out in Sanctuary. I also had some merchants there so that further helped with caps and ammo.

Seems like I get a million and one Pipe Pistol variations, .38 ammo, & leather armor off of the raiders & super mutants I kill. I've been collecting the ammo but I've struggled to find decent weapons to fire it with (I found a Pipe Submachine Gun that's decent but only at close range). I suppose I could collect & sell the guns & armor but I quickly surpass my weight limit. I'll go around collecting from the dead bodies I've left in my wake to sell at the various vendors. There's a perk where you can carry more like in the previous games right?
