Old topic title: "Star Trek Beyond - Hikaru Sulu openly gay"

It seems that Hikaru Sulu is going to be an openly gay character. The decision is largely because George Takei happened to be gay.

George Takei would love to have a gay character in the movie, but not Sulu. He doesn't think Sulu was a gay character. So he isn't giving his blessing on this one.

And I agree with Takei's stance. It's blurring the line between actor and the character they are trying to portray. I doubt Ian Mckellen would give his blessing to make Magneto gay in live action film series just because he happened to portray him first.

Yeah.. relationships in Star Trek aren't meant to be the focus. If it's just like, a scene of people saying bye to their respective loved ones, then fine, yeah, who cares. But if it's a out of place subplot just to be inclusive and show-offy in a "Look how modern we are!" kind of way then frankly it's just condescending and phony. There have been episodes that certainly have relationships as a bit of a focus but... movies? They usually have other things to focus on. Guess it can't really be judged before they do it though.

I've seen the movie now, without spoiling anything:

1. It's all around better than Into Darkness.
2. The main plot layer "exposition + villain does something terrible, now go kill the villain" is weaker than the first Abrams film, but the other plot layers are significantly stronger. It felt a lot more solid a film than the first two in that regard.
3. Script was actually very well done, and I hope Simon Pegg continues.
4. The audio was a significant improvement from the previous films, probably the best of any of the films.
5. The special effects were actually impressive, a lot more in the attention to detail. They actually showed the warp bubble on the ship. It is also one of the most lively uses of 3D since avatar.
6. There are some really great scenes that don't rely on special effects.

The scene with Spock looking at the picture of the original crew was especially touching. It was also the moment when I thought "Oh! THIS is what this movie is actually about." - it's the unity of the crew, their bravery to keep expanding the frontier, and how they overcome so much working together; and this is one of the best examples of this sort of story, ever.

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie a lot. I really hope to see another one sooner than 3 years. This one really left me wanting to see more.
