  • Conan Exiles - Early Access

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

Save your money. At least for now.

Sometimes I scratch my head when I read Steam reviews. Are people just stupid or has steam cultivated a user base with extraordinarily low expectations?

Conan Exiles is extremely slim on content, which I can understand from an Early Access title. The problem is what is there doesn't look like it will be especially fun even when polished and expanded. All the fan excitement seems based on wishful thinking. Combat is very rudimentary, on par with low budget survival/crafting games and the crafting/building is serviceable at best. Conan seems to be trading on a singular aspect (PVP) being eventually fun, but given how blah the single player/PVE game looks to be, that seems like a losing bet...but who knows.

If I didn't know better, I'd say people are excited about this game simply due to some nudity and slaves (thralls).... go download some BDSM porn instead. It's free.

If you are into this genre -- go for 7 days to die (PC) or any of the other dozens of more established games.

The caliber of game that Exiles is competing with contains the fanbases of H1Z1, Day Z, and other marginally finished "survival"/"king of the hill" type games. If one of these developers ever release a finished product that people haven't been sick of for 3+ years of shitty early access, they'll make a killing.

I own all those games and more...because I am a sucker. I need to ban myself from buying these types of games if they are early access...

...but I won't. Because as soon as one of these games hits VR, I know I will day 1 buy it...and be disappointed I am sure.

In the same vein of game, I do hear good things about The Culling if that's your cup of tea. It's less focused on the crafting (I think there's some?) and wilderness survival and more focused on the killing. I've watched it get played on Twitch a little. It's kind of like if someone made a video game out of the Hunger Games but didn't try to hamstring any story into it.
