Haha I was thinking about posting this. Even if you just took out all the horrifying trolling and the porn - if you set an AI loose on the Internet without finding some kind of magic way to teach it the subtleties of humor and whatnot it would come out like this.

You just can't let a learning AI loose with people under the mask of anonymity and expect it to come out doing being anything less than a racial slur shouting sex-maniac.

It really does kind of fucking cut to the heart of the human condition, doesn't it? :) There is no invention we can make so beautiful that a bunch of nonsense people can't turn it into a pile of shit-flinging monkey business within a 24-hour period, apparently.

Some more context that makes it even creepier: I had no idea Tay was explicitly meant to be a "teen girl chatbot".

And, apparently the Internet didn't just make her a Hitler fan, but also basically its under-aged incest-promoting sex slave.

Jeff Rowland probably put it best.

I liked the AI's joke about the meme that Ted Cruz is the Zodiac killer... that basically there is no way Ted Cruz is the Zodiac killer because there's no way he would be satisfied with only killing five people.

The true irony here is that Tay probably had an experience more like most American teenagers than we want to think about:

"She" started out wide-eyed and eager to learn, fell in with the wrong crowd, turned negative and hateful just by imitating those she was spending time with, and finally got yanked out of society for wilding out.

Lessons beyond lessons there in AI science, even if we might not want to think about them too hard.
