Has anyone played this game? I'm sure many of you have... if you haven't it's freeware. Originally written by a Japanese guy in his spare time (around 2004 I think). It was translated into English as "Cave Story". The game play and story are both excellent and rival many if not most 16-bit era games. The graphics are SNES style, maybe a little better and are very appealing. Takes anywhere from 3 to 6 hours to beat.

Here's the download site:

http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/downloads_1.php

you can either get the Japanese version and patch it or get the deluxe package.

Anyway, great game. Anyone play it? Thoughts?

I've heard of it but know nothing about it and haven't played it and have to fry my ass getting this art submission in to a potential employer maybe or my girlfriend will probably kill me. So I can't try it anytime soon I think... :(

It's free on PC. You can try it out on your computer - and even play all of it.

I doubt that I'll buy the WiiWare version (as I've already played the freeware version and I'm broke) but I'm sure that the guy who wrote the original is getting royalties and I'd love to help a brotha out.

I watched a segment about the guy on Nintendo Channel. He lives and works in a tiny ground floor apartment that looks to be in some alley off a main road in Tokyo.

The Wiiware version has alternative art assets, customizeable audio complete with new tracks, and other features; but I am guessing the overall game level design remains the same.

I would probably get it, but I am already playing several 2D platformers. Perhaps later.

X-Play was talking about another WiiWare game called Super Meat Boy:

What? You expect me to always rant about how terrible Nintendo is 24/7? I think you mistake me for a predictable person. Also, I have a Wii and DS. Figure that one out.

The DS escapes the wrath of the Nintendo-bashers, it's their guilty pleasure that they hide in the closet while standing on their soap box. Even the most hardcore of bashers can't deny the sheer awesomeness and diversity of that library.

I'm getting a little old and my memory seems to fade every now and then. Remind me, what's the last game on the Wii that you played, actually enjoyed, and bothered to mention here?

Probably Super Paper Mario. Tried Little King's Story and got bored with it after a while. About halfway through Metroid 3, but I haven't really be motivated to get back into the game. Tried Super Mario Galaxy for a little while, but at least from the first 30 minutes, I don't get the appeal.

I think I remember you mentioning Metroid 3 and you mentioned you didn't mind it but just never finished it. I actually have that same problem with the GTAs. That was what, a year and a half ago?

All I'm trying to say is you can't say "I don't hate Nintendo 'cause I have a Wii or DS" when all you ever do is bash them at any mention of anything coming out for the system before even knowing much about them (without even getting close to playing them) and ignore 95% of what's actually on the system. I've been quite disappointed with Ubisoft for a long time now, nearly this entire generation. Assassin's Creed 2 was more of an exception in that it was good. But I don't automatically discount everything they do just 'cause it's Ubi. I had to play Assassin's Creed 1 through before I realized the sheer level of shittiness of that game. The PS3 was little more than a MGS4 adaptor for nearly the first 3 years of its life but that don't mean I assumed it was a shit system and everything coming out for it was shit. If I had that mentality I would never have tried out Little Big Planet (tell me that doesn't look like a Nintendo-made game? Reggie even said he wished it came out on the Wii) and realized how neat and great it was.

I bitch about Nintendo and the Wii because I'm playing my PC games and Xbox 360 a helluva lot more than I am with my Wii, partly because of the lack of good games on the system. It's like people who own a PS3, but worse. (Hell, the PS3 is actually starting to pick up steam. It only took them, what, five years?)

You give me games like Bioshock and Final Fantasy and Mass Effect and Crackdown and Borderlands and Prototype and Batman... and maybe we'll talk about how good the Wii is.

I play games a lot more on 360 and PS3 than I do on the Wii as well. That's no excuse to completely ignore everything for the system and bash any mention of anything for it.

So you're telling me that unless a game is made specifically to appeal to the male, 18-34 demographic, there's no chance in hell of you playing it? And I'm not talking about Wii games only. There are some great multi-demographic games on the other systems too.

See, if we had the original, superior forum it would be easy to go off tangent and have multiple conversations in a thread. With this inferior one, it's all jumbled together and you have to scroll around to try and follow multiple tangents at once.

Wait. This whole argument started because I didn't act as predictably as you believed and start bashing the system. Then you turn around and say that I bash the system every chance I get.

At no point did you ever deny that you don't take nearly every chance you possibly can to say something negative in any way possible, right? Maybe when you made that original post, you got tied up with something else and couldn't finish everything you wanted to post, maybe you were intoxicated at the time, maybe you were distracted by something, I don't know. It was just very strange behaviour on your part to miss out on a prime opportunity like that. My original comment was simply shock that this was one of those exceptions that make the rule, that's all.

Ahem.

I am actually playing this game and it was hard, but fair. However, I reached a boss that is mega hard and makes me want to stop playing it. I hope it does not destroy my will to play it.

It's lessened, I only get the chance to bring it up a couple of times a year now

Hey, it's not my fault there's always additional evidence popping up to support my claim of a superior board
