How come Metal Gear series didn't just have more games with Big Boss and the old crew if they're so insistent on recycling characters who should be totally dead? Why even bother with Raiden and his side story game when anything that involves Big Boss seems to be as close as guaranteed win as you can get?

There's only so much you can do with Big Boss due to timeline constraints. The PSP games are directly after MGS #3 up to the 70s so you're eventually gonna get to the original two games, likely in one or two more games. You need something after that

And I agree, Eric. I say this is a next gen game

Um just the fact that there was time to take Big Boss's genes to raise the next generation of super soldiers means he has been around as a living legend for a generation or so. There's like 20 Star Wars game that took place in under 3 months between Episode 4 and Episode 6 and you won't even need that to pull it off.

Read up on the timelines and you'll see what I mean

Big Boss has been around for a very long time. There's more than enough time for him to have done something else in between the various Metal Gear games or even just take something way before or after the standard timeline, since he was always around anyway. I'm not a big fan of milking out your most popular character but it's probably still a better bet than starring a game with Raiden.

At least give Kojima credit for not over-stretching it. He's been filling in the timegap between MGS3 and Metal Gear with the PSP games and this new one, no trying to squeeze an extra "adventure" somewhere random or going pre-MGS3. So far, it's been about the rise of Big Boss and not Big Boss filler

Paz seems pretty filler material anyway, and filler material with Big Boss is still more interesting than anything involving Raiden. I mean we're not talking about Megaman level of recycling here. Big Boss obviously must have done a lot of stuff to be the living legend he turned out to be. You can even have a game that features after he supposedly died, since he seems to be able to beat anybody even if he's on a wheelchair.

Spoiler: show
Was he dead before or after the wheelchair? :-)
