  • Microsoft is abandoning the set-top box idea

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

What's the set-top box?

A set-top box is a theoretical all-in-one electronic device, kinda like they keep saying the PS2 is. It's supposed to be a DVD player, cable box, DVR, hooks up to your camera, internet, etc.

I never liked the idea of all these extra worthless features on consoles which only really served to jack up the price. Good for Microsoft.

About time. I don't want a console to cost extra just so it can be a half-assed computer or DVD player.

Cable boxes/DVRs aren't standardized anyway, so what's the fucking point? All-in-one devices don't work anyway. Just look at the Mac.

Either way, I just hope I am not spending 300 dollars on the next gen consoles when they could and should be 200 dollars.

I don't get your point. The Mac is a computer and it's advertised as one.

I was referring to the "upgrading means tossing the Mac" part of it. If I need better video, I'm not going to buy another computer.

The same is true for any laptop.

Sort of a necessary evil. As soon as laptops become more modularized, it's "adapt or die".

I don't know, I've never actually needed to upgrade my computer before. Well, not int he last 10 years.

The 90's called, they want their 386 back.

Well, I've had my comp for 5 years now and the only thing that I've put in it is more RAM. It's only now starting to show its age and mostly 'cause I'm doing video conversion. If you don't game, it's not really that necessary to upgrade more than once every 5 years as long as you build a proper comp. I have a few friends with 386's (they got them for free) and they're perfectly fine for surfing, even some of the heavier flash sites. You just have to wait a tad bit extra, that's all. Mind you, it won't work overly well if they decide to play games or for downloading and converting media.

I agree with Zeus.

I gave my fiancee my Dell with a 400mhz Celeron in it that I got in 1999 and she's still using it running Windows XP. I put more RAM in it and a CD Burner and that's it. She doesn't game so it's perfect for her.

Yeah, I had a 900MHz for a long time. Just recently replaced it with a 2GHz or so because of bad memory (or motherboard; I don't know which). But, 10 years is a long time. I think 486s were still selling back then.

I used my old Pentium 400 mhz as my internet computer for the longest time. I never really had any problems with games either until probably the last year or so. Warcraft III even worked fine on it. Recently though I have replaced it with a 3 ghz pentium 4. I also have a mac as well, I think I prefer it in many ways over the PC, the OS seems to be much better done. The problem with macs is compatability, and that will always be a problem for them.

Hmm, this is a quote from my article:

"Bach has no love for the all-in-one entertainment devices that were once supposed to be the future of the industry; he's only interested in adding functions that enhance the gameplay experience."

That's from the prez of Xbox at Microshaft.

Maybe they're thinking along different lines, he and Gates? Odd thing is, the articles are dated the same day as well.

Guess we'll have to wait until next Thursday to find out

It depends on the hybrid for me. Cell phone/PDA... worthless, cell phone/camera, sure why not. Game console/DVD player, god knows i used the hell out of both, Game console/stereo, worthless.

Prtable game device/movie player/mp3 player, THATS GOLD JERRY, GOLD! :)
