  • Yeesh, PS3 Price Check

A Gamasutra story points to a Europe 1 french radio interview with George Fornay, president of Sony Computer Entertainment France and vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. The interview yielded the first public comment from a senior Sony executive on the pricing for Sony's next-generation console.

Fornay said on French radio that the PS3 will cost "around 500 euro [$613], in the range of 499 to 599 euro [$612 to 734]."

Sony Computer Entertainment president, Ken Kutaragi has mentioned that the system was going to be expensive, but $612 expensive? If Sony's pricepoint for the PS3 is $599 in America, will you be standing in line to buy one? Would a more palatable pricepoint of $499 have you camping out in the cold come early November for a PS3? While nothing Fornay says points to the price slipping that low, keep in mind Sony hasn't confirmed, commented or made any indication about what the North American pricepoint will be.

Last I heard was that Sony said that his comments were hypothetical and taken out of context and that he was merely comparing the PS3 as a Blu-Ray Player to other Blu-Ray Players in the works.

Sounds like damage control to me. :)

Well, at least it isn't $800-1200 as some were suggesting earlier in the year. I guess all we can do is wait and see.

Still, I'm just thinking about all the keggers I could throw with spending that kind of money =)

Ken Kutaragi said it would be at least 50,000 yen, which is about 500 USDs. That might have been a polite way of saying $599

Today's exchange rate has 50,000 yen = $590 USD at 118 yen = 1 dollar.

50,000 yen = 515 Canadian at 103 yen = 1 canadian dollar.

Boy, $599 is steep for a PS3...and with me having to tighten my belt lately, I just might not even be able to afford it.

Well, here's hoping it either is cheaper than that, or I get richer...

Yes, but what is the true next generation; the new way to play games with the polygonal power only slightly greater than this generation? Or is it the same way to play games with a lot more polygonal power? I guess it can be both =)

Not graphically or technical-wise

Where'd you get that from?

Actually, that is the accurate value of the Japanese yen posted by Oracle.

How high will the price be? I think too many numbers have been thrown around right now to give legitimacy to anything other than that the system will cost more than 50K yen (which Kutaragi stated himself).

Still in Juneau, though hopefully only for another 6 months. Assuming I have another job lined up, I'm planning to be down in Seattle before the year is over. I had some luck on that last week, got to talk to a programmer from there who came up for a training session, he said to send him my resume and he'd pass it around.

I like how Neo-Geo used the term "four dimensional" similar to how Ken Kutaragi used it.
