Ive put in a few hours of CC and its a fun game so far.

I feel as if it is more of an RPG dungeon crawler than the traditional RPG, but even that isnt exactly accurate. The battle system is 1 vs monsters, so there isnt a party, and while you can run around with your character, the battle screen doesnt allow you to completely roam free, meaning you are fenced in. That alone makes it less Diablo (and less Kingdom Hearts, too), but the fast paced hack and slash of the battles doesnt give you a trad. RPG feel. Anyways, it works for a system like the PSP and gives you lots of options while in battle if you choose to use them. That being said, while you are fighting, there is a slot machine wheel always spinning around that gives you different abilities and status's depending on where it lands. Sometimes, it will land on a limit breaker type move that will automatically fire off. I haven quite grasped this slot machine concept and its annoying that when im about to kill the last enemy, thats when the limit break will go off, essentially wasting it. I wish i had more control over my special moves. Also, battles are fast, and its difficult to shoot off spells or select a technic attack when the battle area is so small and the monsters are all over you (like Kingdom Hearts). I'm still more of a fan of a system like FFX where you can plan and use strategy... i find myself, right now, just hacking away and then running off to cast a cure if i need to, completely ignoring offensive magic... like Kingdom Hearts.

Similar to GoW, CC looks amazing and it is surprising the PSP keeps up. There is minimal loading, the cut scenes and voice are top notch, and the gameplay itself looks more like PS2 than PS1. The PSP truly is an impressive little machine that companies are finally starting to use to its fullest potential.

The strory is interesting, your hero is brash and cocky, and like a good book i want to see what will happen and how this ties into FF7. No complaints about any of that.

I will complain, though, about the music. Some places it is really good, but the guitar wailing battle music is already annoying. Final Fantasies always seem to have good battle music or it is really crappy. I wish they could choose something neutral that you dont even notice since this is the tune you will hear over and over and over again. Monsters on the field are not visible, so it plays like random encounter, but the random encounters are placed... so it isnt random. I hope something in the game changes the background battle music.

Hmmm, anything else i missed, anyone else playing? Oh, am i an idiot, or is there no way to equip weapons and armor? It seems that the only gear you control is materia and accessories... this game is RPG Lite.

It's completely random. You can't control it. You can, however, purchase special materia later on that increases the chances of it landing on a certain ability. With the exception of being INTERRUPTED IN THE MIDDLE OF BATTLE BY CUTSCENES, I really like the battle system.

Offensive magic seems like a waste of time to me, but I never did level much of it up. You should always keep at least one spell on Zack though, since some enemies have really high vitality and will take forever to kill with the sword.

You do eventually get the Darkness technique, which is like the Dark Knight's ability in FFX-2. It seems to be based on magic power (so it works against enemies with high VIT) and it owns.

I thought the voice acting was good as well, but it did eventually begin to grate on me. I think it degrades a bit as the game goes on, along with some speech pacing issues (like odd pauses). Overall, though, it is good.

I'm in the last area of the game, and I have been for days (doing missions). I have to hand it to them for keeping the story cohesive and not letting it succumb to the absurd or non-sensical as FF titles often do. I don't know how it ends yet, but let's just say the game didn't end where I thought it would.

I think the music in this one is among the best I've heard in a FF title in recent memory. But I will agree the regular battle music does get a little repetative. I really like the remixes of FF7 tracks, too.

You'll only get one other weapon, and you know what it is. It acts just like Zack's first sword, though. Accessories take the place of armor. The real customization is in the Materia Fusion, which can be a little intimidating at first. Once you get the hang of it, you can really beef Zack up. One final thing: at some point, you'll have to get one of the two items that breaks the HP limit of 9999. There are other items that break the MP, AP, and damage limit, but the HP one is the only really necessary one unless you really boost your VIT and SPR.

I have the game's sound track on my computer, it's quite nice. The Turks theme is still amazingly badass.

I should qualify my statement and only complain about the irritating guitar battle music. I mentioned it briefly, but the regular music is good, i noticed.

You did do so... I just ignored it!

I need to correct my statement about Darkness: it's damage is based off physical attack, not magic, but it ignores any defense. In any event, I strongly recommend using it once you get it. You can probably find a fusion path to it before you actually get it.

More pro tips:

-Don't bother leveling Cure, Cura, or Curaga. Just buy 99 potions. Their healing increases with your max HP, so now where I have about 40,000HP, they're giving me about a quarter of my health bar.

-On mission 1-1-6, 1000 Shinra Troops, you can level up your materia really quickly. I do think it's later on that you get access to the latter half of the 1-1 missions, but keep checking for them. I'll just watch TV while casting darkness and using potions and see my materia levels soar.

-Since you can buy Potions, Ethers, and Somas for cheap, you really don't need elixirs. I combined something like 50 elixirs with a couple of HP Up materia and that one now has a HP bonus of over 500%.

-Always try to hit dudes in the back (think Ish).

Sweet, finally a game where potions dont become useless in the later stages, i hadnt noticed that it works off % yet, very cool. Also, finally a game where hitting the back of an enemy greatly increases crit. I HAVE noticed that and if i wasnt already wiping through everyone so easily, then i would do it more. I expect the game to get harder, so i will def be using that strat.

I dont know about materia fusion or much about leveling it up just yet, but i like games where you can customize your items (create, level up, etc) so this should be fun.

So I've been in the last dungeon for oh... about two weeks now. I've just been doing a few missions every day and I'm down to the last ten or so. I can't even remember what was happening in the story to get me to where I am now!

My Zack is quite a beast now.

Al Bhed potions were quite potent in FFX.

Skies of Arcadia's potions items were exactly as powerful as the healing spells except they don't use any MP and is dirt cheap.

Well, ain't that a fucking kick in the teeth. Still, that's easy money for them on such a huge installed user base. I can't see them not porting it when PSP sales for it fall off.

That seems to be the pattern. Considering it's essentially the same hardware and development platform, I'd be surprised if we didn't see it later in the year

I remember them saying they wouldn't port GTA:VCS over and it happened anyways. Granted, different companies, but the almighty dollar has a way of changing minds. :)

Yeah, the 120M+ userbase has a way of swaying minds when you're talking about porting over an already-completed game
